THE DAILY COLLEGIAN News Walter Continued from page 2. ever. The Wall Street Journal re¬ ported on July 1. 1996, that the in¬ come gap between rich and poor has "skyrocketed." Another Clinton promise, "An America where we end welfare as we know it.'* However, the Clin¬ ton presidency has meant quite the opposite. While Congress was con¬ trolled by Democrats, not a single welfare reform bill was offered for a vote. Clinton vetoed two Repub¬ lican welfare reform bills before finally signing the latest. Had it not been for widespread public support for welfare reform. Clinton may have never signed the bill. These are just a few examples of the President's inability to stick to an agenda. Not only has Clinton misrepresented his intentions, but now his campaign is blatantly dis¬ torting Dole's record and ideas. The Clinton campaign has re¬ leased a series of attack ads which have grossly misrepresented the positions of Bob Dole and other prominent Republicans. In fact. National Media Inc. reports, "be¬ tween March 1 and June 26, the Democratic National Committee (DNC) ran 21,204 spots around the country, and the Clinton/Gore cam¬ paign 1.845. Of the total, all but 1,008 contained criticism of Dole, House Speaker Newt Gingrich, or a specific Republican Member of Congress." One false claim from a DNC ad says, "Dole/Gingrich tried to raise taxes *en 8 million." The truth is neither Dole nor Gingrich at¬ tempted to implement any tax in¬ crease on any American. Clinton vetoed the Balanced Budget Act, which would have offered $245 bil¬ lion in tax relief. Yet another false claim. "Dole voted to raise payroll taxes, social security taxes, the '90 income tax increase, 900 billion in higher taxes." Dole for President reports, "after adding up all of Bob Dole's votes in the Senate since 1981, he • has supported a net tax reduction of more than $2 trillion." Another commonly used Demo¬ crat scare tactic is the notion that Bob Dole's tax cut will balloon the deficit, and cause deep cuts in edu¬ cation, social security, etc. History proves otherwise. Bob Dole intro¬ duced and guided President Reagan's 1981 Economic Recovery Act. The Act cut personal income tax rates and expanded incentives for saving and investment. This led to the creation of millions of new jobs. Along with this increased eco¬ nomic activity, revenue to the fed¬ eral government increased from $618 billion to $991 billion per year from 1982 to 1989. Bill Clinton is a man who has proven he will say or do anything to get elected. He is, as New York Times columnist Russell Baker puts it, "...unlike Dole, pure prod¬ uct. He exists to be elected, and re¬ elected, and then elected again and again...." America deserves a leader better than this. Bob Dole has a record of cutting taxes and balancing the budget. Bill Clinton's record is full of lies and misrepre¬ sentations. So when you hear the Preident tonight, remember what he said he would do last time. Re¬ member how he assailed Quayle's call for family.values, but now claims to be/the defender of the American family. Remember his record-setting lax increase. Re¬ member his rejection of tax cuts that would bring relief to all Americans. Look at the record, look at his char¬ acter, and decide whether this man deserves another four years.
