Telephone: (209) 278-5733 Sports THE DAILY COLLEGIAN Monday, August 26,1996 Fresno State adds women's equestrian, new coach Sports Information Office Athletic Director Al Bohl an¬ nounced that women's equestrian will become Fresno State's 20th intercollegiate sporty beginning with the 1996-97 academic year. "This is an extremely exciting day for Fresno State athletics," said Bohl. "After months of careful re¬ search into which women's sport we would add to the program for the upcoming academic year, we firmly believe that equestrian is the right choice at the right time for this university and the entire San Joaquin Valley." The Fresno State equestrian team, which has been in existence at the club level for more than 20 years, will continue its membership in the Intercollegiate Horse Show (IHSA), the governing organiza¬ tion of intercollegiate equestrian sports which currently comprises 235 member colleges and univer¬ sities and offers competitions at the regional, zone, and national levels. The Bulldogs are members of IHSA Zone 8, Region 1, and com¬ pete against teams such as Stanford. Nevada, Cal Poly-SLO and UC Davis. The IHSA allows riders with various degrees of experience in English and Western riding disci¬ plines to compete individually and on a team. "Although many people may not realize it, equestrian has a long-standing record of demon¬ strated interest on this campus and in the Valley," Bohl said. "Our goal is to afford a quality, varsity-level competitive opportunity to as many as 60 female student-athletes at Fresno State the inaugural year." Bohl also announced that Megan McGee, who has served as an in¬ structor at Moorehead, Ky., State, Portland State, and Cal Poly-SLO in addition to teaching at private fa¬ cilities in California, Oregon, and Kentucky, has agreed to serve as head coach of the equestrian team on an interim basis. "Megan has a strong back¬ ground in teaching and training both in the public and private sec¬ tors," Bohl said. "We hope to capi¬ talize on her vast experience in get¬ ting this new and exciting program off the ground" McGee. who has served as a volunteer steward at the equestrian venue for the '96 Olympic Games in Atlanta, most recently has been employed as show secretary and office manager at Ram Tap, Inc.,in Fresno. Ram Tap has been the site of the Junior Young Rider and Ama- teur Three Day Event National Championships, since 1989. McGee's equestrian certifica¬ tion includes Federal Equestrian In¬ ternational general steward for three day eventing and dressage; Ameri¬ can Horse Shows Association (AHSA) registered combined train¬ ing technical delegate (licensed in 1986). AHSA recorded dressage technical delegate {1986). and Brit¬ ish Horse Society's instructor's certificate. "This will provide an excellent opportunity for young women to pursue their college education and maintain or develop a competitive riding schedule through the IHSA competitions," McGee said. Fresno State is the third known Division I school to sponsor eques¬ trian as a varsity sport, joining Col¬ lege of Charleston and Brown Uni¬ versity. FresnoState's team will operate out of the university's Student Horse Center, located on Woodrow Ave., north of Shaw. Although a schedule is not in place, it is anticipated that the Bull¬ dogs will compete in two home and at least eight road competitions in 1996-97. PREREQUISITE: ADRENALINE Drive. Intensity.
