The Hermit's Gulch camp¬ ground is located right outside of the city of Avalon. It features clean restroom facilities, coin operated showers and picnic tables and bar¬ becue pits in each camping area. The price for this is $7.50 per night, per person. Also available for rent at the campground are tents, sleeping bags, lanterns and other miscella¬ neous camping items sometimes forgotten at home. "On memorial weekend and other holidays we're getting booked already," said Janell Works, recep¬ tionist at Hermit's Gulch. "For small groups or on weekdays we can usually fit you in with a week's notice, but it's best to make the reservations in advance." Food can be expensive if one visits restaurants such as the trendy El Galleon, or if one wishes to eat shipboard on the Twilight Cruise and Buffet, but the island also of¬ fers small fast food restaurants and a Vons for cheaper purchases. There are several ways of mak¬ ing the trip to Catalina. Helicoptor, express boat and a ferry boat are all available. The ferry boat fits most easily into most student's tight bud¬ gets, costing around $23 round trip. The boat ride takes about two hours, and aboard the boat is a snack bar, a wet bar and video games. The boat leaves several times a day, and tickets can be purchased in advance with Visa, Mastercard or American Express. Tickets pur¬ chased at the terminal can be pur¬ chased with cash, ATM or credit cards. A visit to the island can be a re¬ laxing change from the heat and dust of the valley. Santa Catalina Island is waiting for those who want to visit.
