Assistant Sports Editor: Paul Martinez Telephone: (209) 278-5733 Sports THE DAILY COLLEGIAN - Monday, May 13,1996 / Croce Continued from page 6. any basketball at all. And during his first season at the school, coach Mike Jarvis and his assistants had to teach Dare just about everything from proper footwook to develop¬ ing a jump shot from outside of the paint. Also, Dare's body wasn't ready for the rigorous NBA scheduling. In college hoops, teams usually play 30-35 games in a season, and only about three games per week. In the NBA, the season is 82 games long, played practically every night. That means more elbows, bumps and bruises, and less time for the body to heal. Which is precisley what has happened. Dare has been on the disabled list for various injuries. And when he has been on the court, he has been nothing short of a bust. He is not in the starting lineup, instead one of the last ones to trod off the pine. He is the only active player currently in the NBA to not regis¬ ter an assist. Not even one. My point: too many players that are not ready are skipping their last few years of college, or leaving right out oflngh school, to play in the NBA. Haven't you heard? It's the new latest craze. It's also absurd. Only a handful of players, namely Allen Iverson of Georgetown, Ray Allen of UConn, Marcus Camby of UMass, are even close to being ready to handle the stress of the NBA. And even they are sketchy. Sure, they posess extraordinary physical talents, but most of them can't even buy a beer and need a couple of more years of guidance. Others, such as Jess Settles of Iowa and Jeff McGinnis of North Carolina have to be insane. They were barely named as standouts in their respective conferences, let alone considered as Ail-Ameri¬ cans. McGinnis has no outside shot, doesn't drive the lane well, and throws the ball away as fre¬ quently Fresnans run red lights. He'll be having a great time next year playing in some league in Zimbabwe. And then there's 17-year-old Kobe Bryant of Lower Ivtefion High School in Pennsylvania. Last week he meandered up to his school's podium, in his high school gymnasium, and told the world he didn't need college. He was going to the NBA. And who says the 1,200 SAT score he got determined his intelligence. Bryant, 6-foot-6 and lean as a string bean, says the NBA has been his dream since he was five years old. He feels that is where he be¬ longs. Wrong. He belongs in col¬ lege. What's next? No longer has it become important for a kid to be a true student-athlete, to graduate from his respective university and then play professional sports. In Advertising this me-first generation, where if a player isn't the main focus of the offense he transfers immediately, the players are bigger than the school. Respect for their coach? Please, for¬ get it. Once the kid has gotten what he wants, he's gone. Sayonara, baby. The NCAA needs to put a stop to this. Immediately. A new rule should be drawn up making it necessary for a player to complete at least his jun¬ ior year in college or be 21 years old to be eligible for the NBA. So before these kids make a huge mistake, they need to be reminded of those who have gone into the NBA with high hopes and fallen off the face of the earth. A fella by the name of Yinka Dare comes to mind. K you haven't told your la mi I v you're an organ and tissue donor, you're not.
