Assistant Sports Editor: Paul Martinez Telephone: (209) 278-5733 Sports THE DAILY COLLEGIAN Wednesday, May 1,1996 Swim team signs five freshmen ■ Head Coach Irle picks up five freshmen, including one from Clovis, to build a solid sprinting core By Pat Houlihan Sports Writer Five new swimmers have signed with the Fresno State swimming team, including a national level swimmer, Kristie Rietzel. Fresno State Head Coach Danielle Irle said she wanted to sign a sprinter and a butterflier. She got that when Kathie Lange (St. Charles, 111.) and Rietzel (Hunting¬ ton Beach, Calif.) signed letters of intent. Reitzel features a time of 59.22 in the 100-yard butterfly and 2:08.43 in the 200-yard butterfly. Irle said Rietzel is "a senior na¬ tional level flyer [swimmer] that will really help." Irle recruited a very fast sprint core to compete in the 100-yard freestyle. They include Lange, Heidi Crompton (San Diego, Calif), and Kerri Lynn Poote (Byron, Calif). All three of the swimmers average 54 seconds in the 100 yard freestyle. Poote also brings along another statistic which will contribute to the Bulldogs' success. The Bulldogs, who were recognized with Aca¬ demic All-America Honors for the team's overall GPA at the conclu¬ sion of this season, will benefit from her GPA of 3.97. "She is very motivated and ex¬ cited about collegiate swimming," Irle said. • Rounding out the group of five is local swimmer Angie Paige from Buchanan High School. In addition to the five men¬ tioned, Irle expects two more to sign in the near future. Other times for the swimmers include: Lange—58.93 in the 100- yard backstroke and 24.09 in the 50-yard freestyle. Poote—1:00.8 in the 100-yard butterfly. Rietzel— swims the 1650- and 500-yard freestyle in times of 17:21.13 and 5:04.04, respectively. The Bulldogs also return 16 swimmers from this years team, which placed third in the Western Athletic Conference Champion¬ ships. Baseball Continued from page 6. Behind Pettyjohn's 11 strike outs, the Bulldog offense was able to wear out six Forty-Niner pitch¬ ers for 15 hits. The Bulldogs jumped up one run in the first on a Pete Hennecke RBI single. Hennecke continues a hot season with his two for five, two RBI performance. The Beach answered back in the .second with a Kevin Moore RBI double. They scored again on a two error play by Hennecke. He kicked a grounder and erred a throw to first and a run scored. The 'Niners scored again in the sixth when, after a Derek Feramisco gun to throw out Jason Hodges at home, Giuseppe Chiaramonte had the ball dropped kicked out of his glove. The game was tied in the bot¬ tom of the seventh when the Bull¬ dogs came to bat. Four straight hits by the middle of the order— Kaitfors, Feramisco, Hennecke and Matt Curtis—generated two runs for which gave the Bulldogs the lead for good. The importance of the game be¬ came most evident when Jeff Weaver, normally a starter, was called on to close out the game. Weaver picked up his first save of the season after he struck out Will Shett on three pitches. "The election committee is go¬ ing to cross-check the four voting logs tonight," Martinez said. "If we find any fraud we're not sure what we will do at this point." Individual election ballots can¬ not be traced back to a particular voter because election officials do not require signatures on ballots. "Given our current voting sys¬ tem, this is the best we can do," Moore said. Moore said that Fresno State could use a phone-in voting system like Cal State Fullerton, but voter fraud was still possible with that system too. "All you need is someone's birth date and social security number and you can vote in that persons place," Moore said. Another solution Moore offered was to make students vote at the particular school they major in.
