Monday, April 29,1996 Election '96 Issue School of Agriculture Science and Technology* Name: Carlos A. Lopez Position: School of Agriculture Science and Technology Major: Agriculture Education Party: Reality 1. No. This cut is too drastic. If this passes, clubs would not be able to be funded at lev¬ els previously done. 2. No. Most students in the school of The School of Agriculture, Science and Technol¬ ogy have voiced their opinions not to fund this item-1 agree. Very little coverage is given to some very worthwhile stories. 3. Yes. Part of the educational process for some of the students is getting day care while attending classes. 4. Yes. This is a time for students to meet and hear some nationally known speakers since they might not be given a chance oth¬ erwise. 5. My main philosophy is to represent the people that elected me, (students from The School of Agricultural Sciences and Technol¬ ogy). No. I do not support the referendum cutting the student body fee from $16 to $8. If cut, The Daily Collegian will no longer ex¬ ist; There will no longer be the campus day care or the university Lecture Series. If we don't cut the referendum we will have all these things plus a student will represent our ^college in the California State Student Asso¬ ciation for statewide student representation. 2. Yes! If funding of The Daily Collegian is stopped, we will no longer have a newspa¬ per. We, the students, will not have a voice on this campus. The Insight is not a voice for the campus because it is from the Journal¬ ism class. It is controlled by administrators. unlike The Collegian, which is controlled by the students. Yes! I support the continued funding of the campus day care center by the ASI be¬ cause the day care takes care of children of students here. It allows students with chil¬ dren to obtain an education to better their lives and their family. After all, aren't we here for the same reason? Yes! The University Lecture Series is a part of the University experience. Speakers who come for the ULS are mentors and he¬ roes for many student. Speakers can posi¬ tively change a student's life. My basic political philosophy is represen¬ tation of the students, not businesses. We need to improve student services and the Student Empowerment Alliance can accomplish this need. Name: Greg Hamada Position: The School of Natural Sciences Major: Chemistry Party: Reality 1. No comment. ' / Yes. I do support the continued funding of the paper. I'd like to see the MCJ support the newspaper more, though. 3. No comment. 4. Yes. I find the ULS beneficial for a lot of students. 5. Academics first. Reality has proven leadership and is fiscally responsible. School of Arts and Humanities • Name: Keith A. Bolden Position: Senator Arts and Humanities Major: Theater Arts Party: SEA 1. No, because it would reduce a lot of the services (child care) and the monies that are distributed to clubs and organizations. ' 2. Yes, The Daily Collegian is the voice of the student population, it is student run and what goes in and out of it is up to those students. 3. Yes, because the CDCC provides child care for persons who otherwise cannot attend school without it. 4. Yes, because the lecture series brings speakers and artists to this community that otherwise would not be brought here. 5. I would like recruitment conferences funded more and clubs and organizations. Name: Larry Johnson Position: Arts and Humanities . _ Major: Broadcast Journalism Party: Reality 1. Yes. It's a decision the students need to make, though. 2. Yes. Being a journalism student, I think a daily newspaper on campus is important. 3. Yes. Some parents depend on day care, and they would be unable to go to school without the service. 4. Yes. It's good to expose people to new ideas. \ V 5. ASI funds should go to whatever Ben¬ efits the majority of students. —,. School Of Engineering Name: Ron Brattain Position: School of Engineering Major: Civil engineer Party: Reality 1. Not an issue, each student is capable of 1 deciding the future of student fees. 2. No. A governmental body should not finance a media source. 3. No. However, an alternate solution must be arrived at before action can be taken. 4. Yes. A lecture can be very educational, whatever the topic may be. 5. To promote the best interests of the En¬ gineering School and its clubs and organiza¬ tions within the school. Graduate Studies Name: Shannon Wentworth Position: Graduate Studies Major: English Literature Party: SEA 1. No. Cutting the student fees will not significantly reduce the amount of tuition a student pays. What it will do is cut services that are vital to the continued success of stu¬ dents on this campus, in addition to detrimen¬ tally affecting the continued involvement of Fresno State in the California State Student Association which lobbies to keep tuition costs from going up. 2. Yes. The Daily Collegian is a viable news source which provides excellent train¬ ing for student journalists and an open fo¬ rum for the campus community. 3. Yes. It is important that having a child does not mean missing out on secondary edu¬ cation. Campus day care centers significantly reduce the stress of attending college and parenting. Graduate students and reentry stu¬ dents, in particular, take advantage of these services which are. vital to their continued success at Fresno State. 4. Yes. The University Lecture Series pro¬ vides many students with the opportunity to see, and earn extra credit for seeing, many noted scholars and famous people for an ex¬ tremely reasonable number, (often free) price. From poets to playwrights and activists to scholars, the ULS is an excellent investment in the campus community. 5. I think it is the obligation of student government to attend to the needs of the stu¬ dent. This sounds like an obvious statement, but in reality has become quite a rare occur¬ rence on this campus. In theory, every cent of your sixteen dollar fee should be spent on you, I would like to see this happen in fact. First and foremost, programs that attend to student safety should be funded like the se¬ curity escort service, AIDS Awareness Week apd Violence Against Women, in addition to clubs and organizations that promote cultural unity and diversity awareness. I do not want to expand the role of student government, I want expand the student's role and the student's voice in government. No. If the fee is cut programs across campus will have to cut their budgets. 2. Yes. I'd like to see the newspaper be¬ come self-sufficient, so it does not need ASI funding in the future. 3. Yes. I don't want to see the campus Day care center cut off, but I'd like to see them find some sort of alternative financing for it. 4. Yes. I think it's important that we get guests from the real world to lecture. 5. Academics first. I really do believe that as much money as possible to academic clubs. • School of Business • Name: TiaLee Position: School of Business Major: Business Party: SEA 1. No. From what I understand, it will be cuttingfunding to a lot of worthy causes, like the Collegian and ULS. 2. Yes. Because I believe we need a voice on campus and we need to know what's go¬ ing on at Fresno State. 3. Yes. A lot of our students who have chil¬ dren find it very useful. Without it, a lot of students can't afford day care to attend school. 4. Yes. The people who go find it benefi¬ cial to be exposetfip new viewpoints. Its very beneficial. 5. The funds should go to programs that everyone has access to and should benefit as many students as possible. Name: Ken Hamada Position: The School of Business Major: Financial Services Party: Reality 1. No comment. It's not a campaign is- medium that presents all political views. 3. No comment. 4. Yes. The ULS is an important part of campus life. 5. The ASI should work within budgetary restraints. I believe ASI funds should go to events and clubs that benefit the entire school, 2. Yes. There needs to be some form of not special interests. • Post #1 Name: Cuue Vue Position: Post #1 Major: Liberal Studies Party: SEA 1. No. Because cutting the fee will de¬ crease the amount of money the ASI will be able to allocate to different clubs. 2. Yes. I feel that the Daily Collegian is an important newspaper on campus and with¬ out it most of us would not know about the many activities on campus. 3. Yes. Because the campus day care is ' easy access for students who are parents. 4. Yes. We need to continue funding be¬ cause students will learn from distinguished lecturers in educational forums. 5. Students first. 9- Name: John Rizzotti Position: Post#l Major: Public Relations Party: Reality 1. No comment. This has to be left up to the students. 2.
