8 THE DAILY COLLEGIAN Tuesday, February 13,1996 Back Page Editor: Jevon Swanson Telephone* (209) 278-5732 Track team sets sights on WAC championships ■ Led by long jumper Moses Kearny and thrower Staci Darden, the Fresno State track team has a strong showing at the Holiday Inn Classic as it pre¬ pares for the WAC championships next week. By Jabari Lawrence Sports Writer After a lofty series of meets over the past month, the Bulldog track team heads into its final indoor event of the 1996 season and cul¬ mination of rt.'tnt efforts—the WAC Championsnip meet next week. The men's and women's squads finished third and second in the WAC Indoors/respectively in 1995. Both look set to take conference crowns at the meet held at the Air Force Academy Feb. 22 through 24. Fresno State had several strong performances at the Holiday Inn Classic in Reno, Nev. last week. The meet was made up of more than 20 teams, including athletes from UCLA, Oregon, Stanford^Wash- ington State, Long Beach State and Eastern Washington. The Bulldogs performed well individually, as 27 men and 28 women athletes posted season bests or personal bests at the competition. Senior Moses Kearney won the high jump for the third straight week. Kearney just missed on two of his three attempts at 7-6 but did clear 7-2 1/2 to win the event over Thad Hathaway from the Univer¬ sity of Idaho. Kearney leaped a school-record 7-4 1/2 a week earlier at the Bill Cosby Invitational, also in Reno. That mark automatically qualified him for the NCAA Championships and is the second-highest in the na¬ tion, according to last week's na¬ tional lists. Also, senior Felecia Brown set a personal best in the long jump with a leap of 19-10 1/2. The win¬ ning jump provisionally qualified her for the NCAA Championships. Brown also set a personal record in the 55-meter hurdles at 8.00. The Bulldogs got strong perfor¬ mances from their distance runners as well, as senior Israel Pose and junior Nacho Flores both picked up victories. Pose won the 5,000-meter with a time of 16:00.74, while Flores broke the tape in the 3,000- meter in a personal-best 8:35.98. Senior Lisa Collet made short work of her old personal record of 8.12 in 55-meter hurdles this past weekend. Her new personal record of 7.90 was good enough to provi¬ sionally qualify for the NCAA Championships in the event. Collet also set a season best in the long jump, finishing behind Brown with a 19-7 1/2. A week after she set a personal best in the mile run, junior Danielle Nelson, finished second in the event behind Oregon's Rosy Gardner at 5:09.45. Nelson previously set her personal best of 5:02.99 at the Bill Cosby Invitational on Feb. 3. Senior Staci Darden won the 20- 1b. weight throw for the fourth straight meet. She won with a toss of 56-11. Darden has already auto¬ matically qualified for the NCAA's with a school record throw of 59- 10 1/2 set at the Wolf Pack Invita¬ tional. Junior Melissa Bauermeister re¬ placed her provisional-qualifying mark in the 20-lb. weight throw of 51-7 3/4 set earlier this year with a 53-0 3/4. % .. Friday's Reno Air Games, the featured meet of the weekend that included some of track's biggest stars put some Bulldogs in the spot¬ light and they made the most of the opportunity. The team of Charlton Jordan, Demetrius Snaer, Etroy Nelson and Jamie Houston won the 4x200-meter relay in a time of 1:28.03. Also, senior Jason Dossey took third in the shot put with a season- best throw of 52-6 1/2. Dossey was fifth in the WAC in the shot put as of last week. Fresno State will host a youth clinic this weekend, Feb. 16-17 at the Fresno State Livestock Pavilion. The event will consist of sepa¬ rate clinics for coaches and parents, in addition to one for young ath¬ letes. It will conclude with a mini- track meet on Saturday. The cost of attending the clinic is $5.00 each day for coaches and parents and $1.00 for children.
