BULLDOG BRIEFS Fresno State bowlers to participate in Collegiate Championships The Fresno State Women's bowling team will compete in . the Intercollegiate Bowling Championships. April 10-14 at Kansas City. Mo. The Lady Bulldogs will be ^jalfeof^ixteen teams competing for the national title. The team is led by freshman Traci Anderson who had a 214 per game average during a nine game span at the Sam's Town Collegiate Shootout in Las Vegas. Dec. 28-29, 1995. By Casey Angle Sports Writer Fresno State will be looking to extend stheir home unbeaten streak to eight tomorrow night when they host Cal Poly-SLO at seven in the North Gym. ' The 25th-ranked Bulldogs are on a hot streak of late, after dominat¬ ing at the California Collegiate Championships in San Francisco on Saturday and winning their last two duals. At the Collegiate Champion¬ ships, six Bulldog wrestlers took home titles and two others took sec¬ ond as Fresno State won the tour¬ nament for the third straight season. "Obviously I'm happy," Bulldog Head Coach Dennis DeLiddo said. "I brought seven starters and all seven were in the finals. It wasn't the toughest tournament in the world, but we had six champs. I can't complain." Leading the way for Fresno State on Saturday was junior Nick Zinkin, who was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Wrestler after winning the 126- pound title. Zinkin was dominating, pinning three opponents, including Stanford's Matt Cano 1:23 into the title match. He also won the Coach Haddad Award for getting those three pins in 10:58. "He started wrestling like he's capable of," DeLiddo said. "It was good to see him cut it loose." "Everything was working for me and I felt good," said Zinkin, who had been battling the flu last week. In addition to Zinkin, Yero Washington (134 pounds), Alfonzo Tucker (158), Jason Street (177), Lalo Moz (190), and Darin Preisendorf (heavyweight) also took first. Brendan Buckley (142) and Byron Campbell (158) took second. Fresno State tallied 111 team points to second-place* Cal Poly- SLO's 104. Cal State Fullerton was a distant third with 56. San Luis Obispo, who carries a 7-3 (3-1 in the Pac-10) record into torrjorrow night's matchup with the Bulldogs, and have won six of their last seven. "They [Cal Poly] matchup pretty tough against us," DeLiddo said. "If we wrestle good like we did at San Francisco we should be all right. But we have got to get a consistent performance." Track splits squad, 'Dogs break records By Jabari Lawrence Sports Writer Saturday marked a day of fallen records as the Bulldog Men and Women's track teams split their squads and competed in the Bill Cosby Indoor Invitatiqnal in Reno, Nev. and the Bakersfield Roadrunner Outdoor Invitational. Bill Cosby Indoor Invite.: • Senior Moses Kearney broke his own school high jump record, which he had set just a week ear¬ lier, as he cleared 7'-4 1/2" to win the event. His performance automati¬ cally qualifies him for the NCAA Indoor Championships. Sophomore Erik Nyberg fin¬ ished, tied for second at the Bill Cosby Invitational by clearing 7'- 0 1/4". • Senior Kipp Ortenburger overcame illness (mononucleosis and hepatitis), which he had been suffering with since the end of the cross country season, to finish first in the mile with a time of 4:12.28. • The women's relay team of won the 4x400 meter relay for the second consecutive week. Sopho¬ mores Ardin Harrison and Tami Simpson, freshman Angela Daigle and senior Felecia Brown set a new Frenso State record at 3:44.07. Please see TRACK, Page 7. Women's Tennis team beats Nevada | The Women's Tennis team follows the lead of No. 1 seed Dora Djilianova in route to its seventh win of the season. By Paige Devers Sports Writer Despite overcast weather, the Fresno State Women's Team con¬ tinued to shine on Friday with a 7- 2 win over Nevada. The win boosted their season record to 7-1. Six of the seven wins came in singles play as the Bulldogs contin¬ ued their hot play. No. 1 seed Dora Djilianova, a freshman from Bulgaria, beat Nevada's Kristi Harris 6-1.6-1, with ease as she improved to 5-0 on the^ season. No. 2 Marta Pitarch continued her .dominating season by beating Nevada's LeAnne Mattland 6-1,6- 1. Pitarch is now 11-2 on the sea¬ son and has ye-, to lose in four dual matches. Another Freshman standout, Liz Marpuri sparked win number 12 with a 6-0,6-0 win. The Freshman swept the top 5 with Shana Peete's (Germantown, Tenn.) bright finish of 6-4, 6-4 making her No. 4. Prior to the game, Coach Irene Harris said that Nevada was a good team that was very strong in doubles play. Coach Harris' words proved true Paul Martinez — The Daily Collegian Backhand smash. Fresno State's Dora Djilianova,returns a shot from Nevada's Kristi Harris. Djilianova won the match 6-1, 6-1. as Nevada dominated in doubles action. Djilanova and Terje Pallo fell to the tandem of Harris and Mattland, 8-6. Fresno State's Marpuri and Townsend also lost 8-6. The Bulldogs did however get a win in with their lowest doubles team. Freshman Kandiss Crieghton and Peete recorded a 9-7 victory. Fresno State faces their tough¬ est opponent of the season when they take on second ranked Stanford at Palo Alto today. Stanford's six single players are all nationally ranked. They are led by junior Katie Schlukebir. Their three doubles teams are ranked as well. Last year the Cardinal finished third at the NCAA Championships. The Bulldogs won't be home again until Feb. 25th when the team hosts UC Davis. . 9
