Fresno CSUF offers graphical Internet access ■ Students and faculty can connect visually to the World Wide Web through CCMS By Richard Ahmed Staff Writer Even though some students have their own computers at home, they still use the computer labs on cam¬ pus. Sometimes they do this because they do not have Microsoft Word or Aldus (now Adobe) Pagemaker at home. Other times, they come oft campus to use the Internet, the World Wide Web (Netscape) and the like. This university has been, for some time, working to fill the stu¬ dents' need for lab access from home. Since January 16, the Central Valley Internet Project (CVTP) has been offering graphical Internet access to the educational commu¬ nity. The CVTP is a university spon¬ sored division of Computing, Com¬ munications, and Media Services (CCMS). They offer the students, faculty and staff of California State Uni¬ versity, Fresno, public entities, alumni and educators advanced Internet-based services from home using a modem and a standard phone line. This includes the ability to use Netscape, Telnet, Eudora, other ap¬ plications normally found only in the computer labs. A CVTP account is a service that provides full access to the Internet using the Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP). PPP allows a subscriber to con¬ nect to the Internet through a phone line, be able to graphically view World Wide Web pages, run client software such as Eudora, a graphi¬ cally based e-mail program and play network games that would normally be available only through a hard-wired network, such as the computer l2bs here on campus. "Essentially, PPP differs from the type of account from what stu¬ dents have now in that what they have now is text based, while PPP will give them graphics," Gaither said. The service is pretty easy to use. Just follow the instructions given in the installation disks. If there are any problems, a trained support staff is there to help. Lennon is still available to all students who want it, and are not required to use a CVIP account. Lennon is the name of the campus e-mail and Internet server, and all Please see CVIP, Page 5. Weather Chance of rain high 59/low 45 Trustees reduce remedial classes By Matthew Hart Senior Staff Writer The California State University Board of Trustees voted last week to adopt a new remedial education policy. Timelines, starting in the year 2001, aim to reduce the need in CSUs for remedial education. Starti ng i n 2001, there should be a 10 percent reduction in the num¬ ber of students requiring remedial classes. By the year 2004, the num- ) percent, f.onfy 10 percent of incoming freshmen will be permitted to take remedial classes. According to a summary of the board of truste^ about 47 percent of incoming freshmen require re¬ medial classes in math, and 41 per¬ cent need remedial work in English. The original plan recommended by the board's Educational Policy ' Committee planned to have all re¬ medial classes gone by the year 2001. After six public hearings, the timeline and plan were deemed too unrealistic. The new plan puts em¬ phasis on giving K-12th grades -more time to help students prepare ber will be reduced by.50 percent, and by the final year 2007, only 1 Please see CLASSES, Page 5. Hickey pursues serial murderer facination Eric Hickey By Matthew Hart Senior Staff Writer Professor Eric Hickey has turned a mild interest into a professional ca¬ reer. However, Hickey's interest is not bird watching or stamp collecting. It is serial murderers. Since devoting full time to social deviants, California State University, Fresno Professor Hickey has become an internation¬ ally renowned expert on psychopaths and their behavior. His research on the subject was collected and put into his book "Serial Murderers and Their Victims," which Hickey now uses as a textbook for his upper division criminology class. To write the book, Hickey spent a year and a federal grant going around the country and interviewing existing serial murderers. People he interviewed included John Wayne Gacy, who killed 29 young male pros¬ titutes and stuffed them in a crawl space un¬ der his house. Gacy has since been executed. Few serial murderers have been as celebrated as Gacy, who was the epitome of a suburban community leader and volunteer. Another famous interviewee was Clifford Olson, a Canadian who killed eleven chil¬ dren. Correspondence has even been kept up with some of the kiyers and Hickey is fre¬ quently sent letters. He describes his relation¬ ship with them as symbiotic. "I use them and they use me," Hickey said. The letters are often attempts to get Hickey to understand the murderer's point of view. Of course Hickey does realize that while many serial murderers can be nice people, they are psychopaths and may lie a lot. Currently Hickey is researching a book on stalkers. He is also on the Unabomber task force, and has worked extensively on the behavioral patterns of the famous mad bomber. - Please see HICKEY, Page 4.
