MUSIC Friday, September 29,1995 THE 26-HOUR BUZZ By Shannon Wentworth Arends, CleveUind sing love songs to a capital Him ' . ^* . . • ■ i_ n j .u.. u. i ...•11 , Album: "I Can Hear You" Artist: Carolyn Arends Highlights: "The Altar of Ego," "What I Wouldn't Give" Grade: A- The acoustic pbp style of Carolyn Arends expresses her clear talent as a musician and her faith in God on her debut album, "I Can Hear You." Arends, a 27-year-old Canadian musician, effectively merges her spirituality and her talent, writing the lessons she has learned from God in her own life. "I Can Hear You" is a very per¬ sonal exploration of Arends' faith. "God is here, and He's making Himself known to us," she said. "Love Will," written by Arends and recorded by Michael James, won the 1995 Dove Award for Country Recorded Song. . Carolyn Arends (L) and Ashley Cleveland play the Warnors Theatre with Rich Mullins on Sunday, Oct. 1 at 7:30 p.m. Arends distinguishes herself from other Christian musicians by avoiding too many references to "Him." He is implied in all of her songs. She is able to delicately con¬ vey His omniscience and omnipo¬ tence in all of her songs. "Seize the Day" is a good tune Kennel Bookstore The Best Software. Arends dem¬ onstrates her burgeoning talent as a vocalist on "What I Wouldn't Give" and "The Altar of Ego." "I Can Hear You" is a great Christian album and a good folk album with potential for crossover success. Arends is a truly gifted songwriter and could easily pull an Amy Grant-like pop music coup. Album: "Lessons of Love" Artist: Ashley Cleveland Highlights: The CD packaging, "There's a Light" Grade: C- The homily states. "If you don't h;i\ e anything nice to say dear, then don't say anything at all." So if I give in to the guilt and the pressure, my review ends here. On second thought, I will do my best to constructively criticize this loving tribute to the Lord God. "Lessons of Love," her third al¬ bum, takes Ashley Cleveland back to the roots of Gospel music - as far back as the Old Testament, in fact. She is singing old classic hymns, as well as rock and folk tributes to her Maker. Cleveland's strong point is her vocal prowess. She has a thick, deep, invigorating voice that lends itself well to her country-folk ex¬ pressions of faith. Yet Cleveland's hymns are cov¬ ered in a thick syrup of cliche sen timehl and memories. "Lessons of Love" has too many Bible refer¬ ences and too many love songs to a capital Him. Cleveland has so much potential as a singer and songwriter. I hate to see her gifts thrown away recy- . cling, rather than reinventing. WeekNStuff By Shahada Abdul-Karim Staff Writer WAZZUP!!!
