News THE DAILY COLLEGIAN - Monday, September 11,1995 5 Rush: Beer companies provide banners Continued from page 1. policy. This means that alcoholic beverages will not be served at fra¬ ternity functions. "In part, each individual house agrees to follow the IFC constitu¬ tion, but each is responsible for monitoring its own compliance," said Michael Lum, IFC president at CSUF. Lum said media containing mes¬ sages about drinking were forbid¬ den from the Fraternity Forum, an IFC information session occurring before rash. He said most IFC fraternities' parent organizations have dry rash policies. Dry rash is not without its con¬ tradictions. American brewers Budweiser and Coors have provided banners containing logos for their products, the fraternity name and the word "rash" for the Kappa Sigma, Phi Gamma Delta, Sigma Alpha Epsi- lon, and Sigma Nu fraternity houses. These banners decorate the out¬ side of each house, plainly visible to the public before and during rush. Also, the Delta Sigma Epsilon and Sigma Chi houses boast ban¬ ners with beer logos, but without the fraternity name or the word "rush." Lum said beer companies spon¬ sor fraternity events, providing t- shirts and banners to advertise their product. Asked about the banners, Lum replied, "It's up to each house to portray themselves as they wish." Manuel Olgin, CSUF's Frater¬ nity Adviser, said he sees a conflict in messages between the stated commitment to dry rush and the beer-logo banners. "These (beer companies] offer sponsorship. This cuts the fraternities' costs." "This kind of issue is discussed every year between the administra¬ tion and the fraternity officers." Olgin said. "I personally wish they didn't go with alcoholic beverage company sponsorship. But they're free to do what they will on their property." Olgin acknowledged most stu¬ dents going through fraternity rash are 18-year-old freshmen - three years younger than the State-man¬ dated legal drinking age. To Olgin's knowledge, nodefini- tive study of the ages or back¬ grounds of new CSUF fraternity members has been conducted. "Fraternities are conforming to dry rush on paper just to look good, but they're not following it in spirit." said a counselor at Fresno's Alcohol and Addiction Counseling Center (AAACC.) The counselor insisted on anonymity. "We all know underage people drink, unfortunately," said the AAACC counselor. "In my opinion, the problem with fraternities is that peer pressure takes over, and then alcohol gets used unwisely. Under¬ age people see drinking as very glamorous, and these fraternities use that in their advertising." About the rush banners, the counselor said, "Either fraternities aren't thinking this through, or it's an 'in your face' type of advertis¬ ing. (The IFC] calls this dry rash; maybe in the future, fraternities can advertise themselves without using beer logos."
