Friday, September 15,1995 ^toiy/ THE 26-HOUR BUZZ by SHANNON WENTWORTH Klover ushers in ear-bleeding second wave of punk : "Feel Lucky Punk" Band: Klover Mike S ton — vocals, guitar Chris Doherty — guitar Brian Betzger — drums Darren Hill — bass Highlights: "From Beginning to End," "Here I Go Again," "What A Waste," "Brain" Grade: A Punk is back in a big, fat, hairy, raw band. Klover's debut album is quintessential punk. Chris Doherty and Brian Betzger are veterans of the notorious Gang Green, a Boston punk band with more attitude than talent. They are joined by Darren Hill, former bassist for Paul Westerberg (The Replacements), punk's American father, and Mike Stone, the band's rooster-haired warbler. Klover is a gritty Greenday. Where Greenday takes you into their personal neurosis, Klover has a more global view of the world, politics, change and generation X. Klover doesn't fall into thai pop, radio-pleasing trap; they crank up the distortion and play punk music like the Sex Pistols, only Klover knows how to play their instruments. 4 Versatility is Klover's strong suit. They can crank out a sincere and driving ballad as hard and rough as a fast-paced, politically charged anthem. "What A Waste" is a ballad with a classically punk twist, it is thoughtful and angry, a rare and wonderful combination. Klover's gen-X musings consist of being true to one's self above all else. "I Wanna Be" is a punk diatribe about choosing one's own destiny, while "Our Way" jams home the-way the world is going to change, if it is going to change. The next stage of Punk music, Klover is leading the way with driving drums, grinding guitars, a ballistic bass and well-written, intelligent songs. This is no idiot's trip into musical anarchy. Klover isn't a rebel band without a clue. They are not just angry; they are angry and intelligent. A revolution waiting to happen. Get this punk! Album: "Hit & Run Holiday" - Band: My Life With The Thrill Kill Cult Vox — Groovie Mann, Jacky Blacque & Cinderella Pussie Guitars — Buzz McCoy. Keys — Kitty Killdare Bass — Levi Levi Drums — Dick Fury Horn — Wolfgang Highlights: "Portrait of the Damned," "Glamour is a Rocky Road," "Apollo 69". Grade: B My Life With the Thrill Kill KuIt joins forces with the Bomb Gang Girizon their fifth album to tell the story of Krystal Stariust, a rebellious small town girl with a hunger for glamour, pills and adventure. Krystal hi-jacks a friend and a car, taking to the highway for a "Hit and Run Holiday," the album's title track tells the tale. The story isn't all that original. . Girl escapes small town with reluctant friend. Girl meets boy on highway. Girl does drugs and other notable naughties with boy. Girl's friend gets fed up with being ignored and leaves. Girl goes to a strip joint with boy.-Girl tells boy to get lost. Girl takes off her clothes for money. Girl gets loaded. Girl finds friend dead and boy gone. Girl feels lonely, vulnerable and has epiphany about the nature of life and rebellion. As a musical story, it works. As an album, it has a few good songs, but alone they are not terribly captivating? "Portrait of the Damned" and "Apollo 69" can hold their own out of context. The album sounds like The 1 Who's 'Tommy" swallowed and regurgitated the B-S2s and "Natural Bom Killers." It is a sick and twisted musical ride into adventure, intoxication, fi and a rebel's rites of passage. It is tres chic, totally glamorous and ah out-of-control musical ride in a '69 Chevelle with the pedal to the metal. Retroflashback Album: "Just Can't Get Enough: New Wave Hits of the 80s" Highlights: Split Enz. Duran Duran, Soft Cell. Josie Cotton. Wall of Voodoo. Kajagoogoo. Grade: A Cheesy actors stuck in the last decade bounce like weeble- woobles across the screen trying to sell you the latest compilation disc, extolling the virtues of the too-hip '80s. This latest compila¬ tion from Rhino Records isn't cheesy. It has captured the flash and style of the New. Wave before it became old hat. It includes so many classics but still falls prey to the commer¬ cialism of the '80s by including. the too-ridiculous hits with the timeless classics. Nobody wants to be reminded that they ran around singing "Oh, Mickey you're so fine, you're so fine you blow my mind, hey Mickey."
