Yes, even his walls. From the walls of his office in the Music building, there is a his¬ tory of this renowned flamenco guitarist There are pictures, like the one of him and Ed Sullivan, that show Serrano's fame. There are also posters from concerts all over the world that call him "The King of Flamenco Guitar." "He'soneoftheworid'sbest/' said biology major Scott.Bender who is taking one of Serrano's classes. "I don't think many people realize that" What many people may not realize is that this CSU, Fresno professor has made 25 albums and one video, has written sev¬ eral books and still gives concerts all over the world. His latest album "Cueva Gitana" will be released in the next few months, but Serrano said that doesn't mean he's stopped working. "This is what I da I do one, and even if ifs not in the market yet, I start on my next one," Serrano said. He said he does this because "it keeps me in good shape and excited. Chapman commutes three and one half hours a week for lessons with Serrano. But sincehe was 13 years old, Serrano has not declined once. It was at 13 that ne made his profes¬ sional debut, and a year after that he recorded his first album. He learned the art of flamenco guitar in his home country of Spain where the musk was al¬ most like part of the family. "My father was my teacher. My father was a very well-known flamenco guitarist in Spain. My mother was a flamenco singer." Serrano had his first appear¬ ance in the United States in 1961 when he appeared on the "Ed Sullivan Show." From there, he made several more appearances, including one at the Desert Inn in Las Vegas. Serrano said he had so many concerts that he didn't have time to go back to Spain. Until about 12 years ago, he had lived in several states, includ¬ ing Michigan where he met his wife. But after touring in Califor¬ nia and visiting Fresno, he de¬ cided to make Fresno his home. Serrano said he liked Fresno be¬ cause he hates snow and the weather here reminded him of his home in Spain. After living here, he was of¬ fered the chance of working at CSUF in 1983. He said he could have made a living by performing butwhentheopportunitytowork was open, he took it " At the time I was (going] to tourmJar>anarKithePhilirjpines/' he said, but Serrano said he took the CSUF Job after discussing it with his family. "Iwantedtospend more time with my family. I [used] to travel continuously out on tour for four of five months. It was hard on my •family." He became a professor here and continued doing concerts on holidays and weekends and a larger tour during the summer. ,_J$ut this world-wide per¬ former has also enjoyed teaching. "I love teaching," Serrano said. "All of my students are not just my students but [are] also my friends." He said by being more re¬ laxed with his students/ they can play much more relaxed. One student agrees with this. Classical guitar student Joanna • Bueno said, "He makes you laugh sometimes. He doesn't want you tobe nervous. He breaks that ten¬ sion. He's real big on making us lose our fear of playing in front of other.people." -Serrano's explanation for making students feel more at ease is simple. "My father was a very patient person. I think I learned this from him." Serrano has gained popular¬ ity all over the world, and it seems he has even won over his stu¬ dents.
