Not 1 After eating my weight in french toast this morning, I decided I would be content just sleeping through this weekend, but duty calls, and tJuis I concluded that a weekend slumber woujdjiot be construc¬ tive. '*''-*.. After missing the big parade, I reported to the bucket brigade, prepared to do a little hand-over-hahd action. Unfortunately, for personal reasons, I decided not to participate. I think it had something to do with the fact that it was cold. I went with the sleep idea. ^ Hey ...why go fight the club* crowds, contend with smoke and wander the streets drunk when you could do that here on campus. Except die drinking part, of course. Concerts tomorrow include East Side Indians, Splendid, Rye Season, Heavy Weather and Soup wmmmmamaamw^a^ammaamamnniM Shack, the cream of the local mu¬ sic scene. A/The Fulton in charming downtown Fresno, home of Scotty's BalrBonds, the performer was going to be blues artist Alvin Youngblood Heart, but as Fulton owner Joe Ramirez sadly, informed me, he canceled. Ramirez also said there's probably going to be nothing. See, this Vintage Days stuff is looking better all the time. _y Saturday night at The Ffidtoj? is the Tower District's sole country band, The Thrillbillies. Yeah, may play covers, but they really make them their own. Singer Stephanie Bogenshutz has one of the pirrrtiest voices this side of Patsy Curie. k Circus Bogus, Fresno's premiere clown punk band, packed The Fulton last week for the band's CD release party. The band's new CD, Sucker, is now out and on the shelves in record stores. Circus Bogus is well-known in town as the band that thrashes their venues, w|0i assistance from their wild fans. But, Ramirez said it was the best show��the club's had. "They made a big mess, but mere was no permanent damage," Ramirez said. Tonight at Club Fred is local alternative band Flaming June. Alternative to what? Air guitar, of course. These guys really play. And if these shows aren't enough to pry you away from the crafts faire extravaganza, Saturday night at Club Fred is me Tulare Dust tour featuring acoustic performances by Dave Alvin(formerly of the Blast¬ ers and X) Peter Case (formerly of The Plimsouls) and Tom Russel(formerly of Canada), The three performers were part of the tribute to Merle Haggard show last week at San Francisco's Filmore Auditorium. Each is a brilliant songwriter, and the show will be an outright homage to America's best music So if you like music and aren't ecstatic about RUN DMC, then go to Club Fred because ifs going to be a good one. , V! Sleeping through another review Review Guru By Shelly Silva Hollywood Pictures latest release, "While You Were Sleeping", hits theaters today in a cloud of moon dust and Mr. Sandman's magic. While I was sleeping, through the film, I had a won¬ derful dream of a love story starring the ever-cute sweet¬ heart Sandra Bullock and the always entertaining Bill Pull¬ man. But as my head slide off my fist and hit the unsuspect¬ ing patron next to me, who-I- also woke up, I was bemused by the visions of sugar plums and candy canes on the silver screen. This latest attempt to re¬ capture the magic of "Sleep¬ less in Seattle" fell short; straight onto an oncoming sub¬ way. The film stars Sandra Bullock("Speed")andBill Pull¬ man ("Sleepless in Seattle") Pullman gets to play the love interest in this one which is finally refreshing ,to see, this poor guy always has to give up the girl. Anyway, the film is a little slow, but if I had to de scribe the film in one word it would have to be cute. Although the film stars a cast of talented and season vet¬ erans of the screen, none of them had enough enough chemistry between each other to create a spark. The cast includes Peter Gallagher ("Sex, lies and vid¬ eotape"), Peter Boyle ("The Dream Team"), Jack Warden ("Bullets Over Broadway"), Glynis Johns ("The Sundowners", 1960), Micole Mercurio ("The Client") and newcomer Monica Keena. The film depended entirely too much on the cut«ness of romance and on Bullock's smile rather than a decent story and an interesting plot The right intention was there but the sub¬ ject has been beaten into the ground. Hollywood needs to take a new angle on romance, Meg Ryan owns the rights to this genre of love comedy, and Bullock just couldn't snatch it away. Bullock has to be the lucki¬ est individual in Hollywood today. Her career has catapulted her into a league of the most sought after actresses in tinsel town. First she starred ^oppo¬ site Sly Stallone in "Demolition Man" thenshehappened to fall into the roll of passenger rum bus driver in the block buster hit "Speed". However/casting her as the lead in "While You Were Steeping" was a prema¬ ture act Bullock has a talent for supporting other actors in films at this stage of her career. I say throw her in a drama and see what happens. Cute ain't genna cut it forever. Here's the breakdown in a dam shelL Lucy (Bullock) is a woman all aloneTbr the holi¬ days in Chicago. She works for the Chicago subway and is des¬ perately lonely, ,Joo lonely. * She see's this guy every¬ day, Peter (Gallagher), and falls in love. But he doesn't know she exists. One fateful day finds Peter getting mugged at the sub¬ way station where Lucy comes to the rescue and saves the day. However, Peter finds himself in a coma and in the hospital Un¬ der a tremendous mistake and identity problem Peter's family trunks Lucy is Peter's fiancee. To make a tedious story short, Lucy falls in love with his family, since she doesn't have one, and to add another glitch in the story, Lucy falls madly and deeply in love with Jack (Pullman), Peter's brother. All this happens while Peter is sleeping. Unless you're a sappy to the point of toothache roman¬ tic, don't spend: seven bucks for this film. In fact, waiting until Murphy's Express can deliver it would be a better alternative.
