Why hell, I've been breath¬ ing that stuff for years and it noooot iffected meeeee at allll. And.. .if you haven't heard the big news, the Forestiere Un- Students prance . dereround Gardens are open j • j r again. According to the Fresno aTOUnd IS gOOd tOT visitorsbureau, they are Fresno's tJie sou1 DUt nave one true tourist attraction. Obvi¬ ously they haven't visited Dug's yOU ever Spent Z ^?JS£&*» sunny afternoon at is this giant garden that old man MlllertOn Lake?' Baldasare Forestiere dug in 1906 A to escape Fresno's heat. Ij^uess he couldn t get the swamp cooler to work. Anyway, he dug a two-bedroom house in there as well. By the time he died in 1946, he had dug some 50 rooms with a pick and shovel including a vault for aging cheese, a room for making wine, a ballroom with a stage and an 800-foot automobile tunnel. I guess the guy had a little spare time on his hands. The gardens were closed a few years ago amid legal problems and were recently reopened. But like kryptonite to Superman, rains forced the closure of the gardens last weekend. I don't know why they wciuld close them. In my eyes, the second most popular tourist attraction in Fresno could be the world's largest man-made mudhole. Now that would really put us on the map^—' *, And what about those Fresno clubs. I've logged countless Jxs in them — researching. My conclusion; plenty good. Why this Friday in Club Fred is Fresno rock band East Side Indians 2 Lane Blacktop. Saturday night are Mtema ti ve bands Buzzbomn and Plague Mosaic. And if that isn't enough, how could you abandon Fresno when Cafe Intermezzo will hold a Traditional Celtic Jam Session on Sunday afternoon betWeei*3 p-.m. and 5 p.m. I can jus t see the Celtic forefathers sitting around^dusting off some Hendrix and Stones' covers. Maybe they'll do the bagpipe version of "Freebird." I mean, you can't have a jam session without doing "Freebird." Pick of the week: Friday and Saturday nights at The Fulton in downtown Fresno is a band called John tine Conqueroo. I know it sound silly, but they're actually way cool Fulton owner Joe Ramirez described them as a "true American folk band." The instrumenta¬ tion includes pots arid pan?, wash tub bass, accordion and guitar. They hail from Wisconsin and if they're anything like the cheddar cheese from there, ifs going to be a good time. And you don't even need a plane ticket, Ramirez also said the band's zydeco, cajun sound was featured in National Geographic. Any band that makes it to National Geographic has got to be at least as interesting as a sn a ke. And, they're at The Fulton for two nights so if you like them the first night you can go back again. \ In the lovely city of Hanford^another spring break ho t spot, will *. be Glen Delpit and the Subterraneans at the Bastille restaurant and nightclub on Saturday night Across the street from the Bastille it Superior Dairy, home of big homemade ice cream. Of course, if all else faib and you're stuck in Fresno on spring break, you can always run through the sprinklers. And what's my idea of a picture-perfect spring break? Running through the Forestiere gardens ha If-neckid while eating a big homemade ice cream. Hey, I live simply.
