2—The Daily Collegian Thursday, April 20,1995 Editorial/Opinion ; Spirit of $76 not f| exactly flying high The current hullabaloo in the University Student Union Board of Directors illustrates the fragile nature of student self-, government. This fragility carries into affaks4hat all CSU, \ Fresno students fund, to the tune of $76 in mandatory fees every academic year per student; hence, students should evidently have an interest in USU Board decisions and composition. -» In brief, the Board voted Monday to change the last two elected student representatives on the Board to appointed posts answerable solely to themselves. Board chair Mary Ann Drummond stated outright that the special meeting was in¬ tended to make this change before tomorrow's deadline for election petitions. Originally, the Board wanted to do this without a meeting, nor even through a conference call. The Board wanted to do this through a series of individual phone calls to tally votes. Voting through a conference call may have been allowed through current Board bylaws, but this vote by series of calls rings particularly strange. Few indeed are the organizations that would handle busi¬ ness of any substance, much less a fundamental change in their governing structure, by way of a series of one-on-one meetings in which quorum is attained only in a peculiar cumulative sense. Drummond did allow that Monday's special meeting was being held to handle'the matter properly, after consultation with the Board's legal advisors. Still, one wonders why the individual- phone-vote method was attempted in the first place. The change in the Board's bylaws carried despite well- constructed arguments by Associated Student, Inc. president and USU Board representative Susan Gonzales-Schweiki, her aide Chris Volkerts and former ASI president Stacey Green Their arguments drew on myriad past USU Board and ASI derisions,_as well as sound reasons for continued inclusion of Board members ejected by, and thus directly accountable to, the average student. , Reaction to the trio's entreaties ran from agreement on / principle to curt dismissal. Faculty representativl? to the Board Dr. Donna Pickel responded to some of Volkerts' statements personally, with a brusqueness not ordinarily associated with a tenured academicianT •>■ * v The impression I got from the meeting was that some on .the Board found being tied to the ASI-administered elections even in their modest way (two posts compared to 28 ASI positions) too , —bothersome, even tacky. And, the meeting turned Kafkaesque for over half an hour while members talked about whether to even recognize Schweiki as a voting member. The argument ranitha>even if she had a stnicturaJLright to vote there, she should bedjsqualified due to excessive absences , at Board meetings — meetings she said she was not allowed to attend or participate in. Hopefully, the attentive reader will find the Catch-22 that nearly caught Schweiki clear. V But her participation in the vote did not prove decisive. Board members Pamela Cheong, Natasha Frazier, Stephen Goh, Dr. Pickel, Harmanjit "Bobby" Singh and Robert Vega voted- to eliminate elected Bodrd positions, while Michael Moore, # Schweiki and Shelly Silva voted to keep them. In the final analysis, it appears the Monday vote serves to eliminate direct student accountability. Yet, the seeds for further changes in USU Board bylaws may fiave already been planted. At one point in, the meeting, Moore offered an alternative Solution: The Board could advertise for and conduct their own independent elections for Board posts. While that idea got placed en the back burner, as it was not directly tied to the matter at hand, Drummond indicated that it was an idea worth looking into at a later date. Indeed, perhaps one, two or even all seven voting student posts on the Board . could make to come from a direct student mandate. A little quick math shows that $76 in fees per student, multiplied by 16,000+ students comes to oyer $1.2 million annually in USU funds straight out of students' pockets. Sorely, it wouldn't be that hard to set aside a few hundred dollars for biannual or • staggered annual election proceedings. r Sky-high student Tark tickets DearEditor, '——Thank you to the . ___ Athletic Department, the search committee and Dr. Welty for hiring Tarkanian. • Now the question is, "Will the Athletic Department rely on Tarkanian to get the students downtown, or are they going to offer the students a helping hand?" This is a question of both economics and accessibility. On the economic side Fresno State does offer student season tickets at a reasonable price. Last year, the Athletic Department charged stu¬ dents $90 for 18 games. That works out to a very affordable $5 dollars a game. UnfoTlunately, for various reasons which include Selland Arena being a city-owned building, students were charged the general public adrnissions rate $12 or $14 for single game tickets. Many students who do not live in Fresno who want to attend games don't attend because many home games occur during winter break and a single game ticket is not affordable. There are various ways Your Name Here 3 D Letters to the Editor c/oThe Daily Collegian Keats Campus Building Mail Stop 42 Fresno, CA 93740-0042 \ E-mail: SLW02@mondrian.csufresno.edu -J of resolving this problem. One solution is to offer a half season pass that will allow students to attend all games that occur while classes are in session. Another suggestion is to work something out with the city so that student single game ticket prices can be lowered to somewhere around $7. Accessing Selland Arena is nearly impossible for many students who live on or near our campus. Many of these students do not have a car; some of those who do.have cars do not find the trip to Selland Arena and the expense of parking to be worth the hassle. . " A simple solution would be to offer bus rides to Selland Arena for a modest charge, let's say a dollar or two per person . I know those in the Athletic Department believe that they will have no problem selling student . season tickets next season, and they may be right I feel that everyone who wants to attend a game should at least have the opportunity. By making some slight changes, I believe that the students will show increased interest in the basketball program that will long outlast the Tarkanian era.
