The 78-year-old Tatarian, who worked at UPI for 34 years and is a current columnist for The Fresno Bee, said his interest in journalism back in the years ef the Depression's infancy was sparked by an English teacher he had in junior high school. 'Tt [journalism] had never occurred to me before, and once I got started, I never knew any¬ thing so exciting," said Tatarian, who graduated from FresnoState College in 1938 with a bachelor's degree in political science, long before the university offered a degree in journalism. Tatarian taught at CSUF for 15 years after retiring from UPI, earning the university's Outstand- ' ing Professor award in 1981 and its Distinguished Alumni award in 1984 before retiring three years later. Tatarian said he was glad to see the endowed chair finally come to fruition after many years. 'To be able to bring this drive to a close is fantastic. Ifs a great honor, and it's nr.uch better than a posthumous honor," said Tatarian, who began teaching at CSUF when most of today's stu¬ dents were/just beginning their education Tatarian said the old fire-in- the-belly instinct of journalism still sparks his interest 'To this day, I still get a charge outofseeingmy stuff in print,"he said. **?
