'—The Daily Collegian Friday, March 3,1995 It ,4 \r 3i tf i i J 4> w .»» i 1 ' ^'r l 1 ^i Arts & Entertainment All Around The Town By Joe Rosatojr Neil'still speaking to It never comes out like on TV R Review Guru By Shelly Silva At Adjai Starring Jodie Foster, Liam Neeson and Natasha , Richardson Now Playing at Sierra Vista I'm convinced that somewhere in my life the demons of laundry have come to perch on my shoulder, peering into my clothes hamper, cLreaming up new ways of foiling my wash. Somehow, every time I wash, something gets bleached, some¬ thing turns pink, and then one of my blue-gray wool-blend socks is sucked into that eternal washing machine black hole; I'm sure you all know the one. I mean, despite careful measuring of detergent, determining the optimum washing temperature from that chart on the back of the detergent box and making sure I don't overload,' it never comes out like on TV. This Saturday, instead of toiling with the personal hell that is my laundry, I'm going to the Laundromat No, not to wash. In the deep, deep heart of the Tower District across Fulton street from Soho,_next to Vini Vidi Vici, is a small enclave, a former Laundromat, now mystically transformed into the Laundromat Performance Space. There are no washers here. Where polyester leisure slacks once tumbled dry, punk fans now slam dance, modern theater is liberated from commercial halls and the hippest of the hip relive the true days of under¬ ground. The laundromat is being used as a performance space Jodie Foster, Natasha Richardson and Liam Neeson star in Twentieth Cehtun/Fox's 'Neir. for bands, mainly alternative, and for plays. •" "• >S Unfortunately, the Laundromat Performance Space schedule There are few films out there that can stay afloat in the sea of isn't quite as predictable as a rinse cycle. Also on the bill ^ Foster gives a classic perfor¬ mance as Nell, a woman who has lived in the woods of Norm Caro¬ lina her entire life with no contact with the outside world. Foster works her acting bra¬ vado in a way to tantalize and titillate audiences across the world. In a time when the silver are "I Madman" and "The Willys," two of Fresno's upland- comings. Tickets are $4. This Friday at The Fulton is "Igni¬ tion" and my favorite band, "Waffle." Doesn't a waffle sound good right about now. Here's the breakdown. The film begins with Dr. Lovell'dis- covering Nell who does not seem • ally harass their co-stars on screen, #to speak any known language. Out with the old The new Old Fresno Icehouse, which previously was not a club, therefore not technically old, but new, is in an old building, making it the Old Fresno Icehouse, but not the old Old Fresno Icehouse. Of course, if s their place and they can call it what they want Sfcto those of you who are as literally impaired as I am, if s a dubTXnother downtown club. Seeing a pattern This Friday at the Old Fresno Icehouse is The Icehouse All Star Jazz Band with Chris Terrence show bandleader Lartjr Gittens, formerly of Kool and the Gang. Saturday night is 'Tarty Nite," at The Icehouse. Well, Of course it is. Isn't every night in Fresno? The flier says "dress code enforced," which I assume means 'wear something you won't mind getting soiled.' I don't know what "Party Nite" means to you.- Not to be left out of the ska thing, Club Fred has ska band Los Hooligans and Plague Mosaic( not ska) on Friday night , Saturday if s-the return of Fresno's most everlasting band, The Ms Allans. They've survived wave after wave of Fresno groups m their 10 years in the scene. They're due to release their fifth album pretty soon so catch them while you can Long may they wave that Fresno flag. After all, not everyone can be from Fresno. See ya out of motion picture goddesses. I find it a blessing to be-«Uve in a time when Foster will continue to make movies and develop her lived in this remote cabin since birth, with her mother who suf¬ fers from a speech impediment due to several strokes. Nell has never known the outside world and doesn't seem to mind that fact one bit. Nell has also devel¬ oped her own language through sounds and gestures of her own. LovelL soon after discovering Nell, asks Paula Olsen to come checkoutthe situation in the woods. Olsen realizes that Nell is a tremen¬ dous find and one hell of a research project. While Olsen and Lovell study Nell, they end up discover¬ ing more about themselves and each other instead, eventually fall¬ ing injove. Bom end up trying to protect Nell from outside forces. They soon realize that Nell would have been fine and dandy if every¬ body would have left her alone in the first place. The film presents a magical energy and inspiration that is vir¬ tually indescribable. Foster is able to^ bring forth a character who is a mixture of naive purity and inno¬ cence while at the same time being a woman of the world.
