The New Reich of the Right
Age of Dependence
I think I would be safe in saying that all of you reading this
column today are adults; however, I can't be certain what type of
adult each of you is considered. It has come to my attention that
there are three classifications 6f adults placed on young persons
from the ages of 18 to 24. S
The-hrst classification is the long-sought age of 18 when we
are promised the right to vote, the privilege of being considered
an adult and the honor of being able to die for our country in
times of war. Once a person turns 18, Uncle Sam considers this
person eligible to be carted away to far-off lands in times of war.
Because young people are being drafted, the public saw the need
to allow these fortunate individuals the right to vote for^he
officials that would be sending them to their possible deaths.
Now that this is law in the United States, the age 18 has been
used in other Ways allowing things once denied to be accessible.
A person of 18 years can now participate in the lottery; they can
legally gamble; they can enter legally binding contracts without
a parent's approval; they can join health clubs, and the list goes
on. With all these wonderful, new opportunities open to a new
adult, there are many things still denied such as the consump¬
tion of alcohol.
At one time, 18 was the legal drinking age in most states
until too many people of that age group were dying due to
drinking.
Therefore, the next type of adult is one who has turned 21 —
that long-awaited age when you can now legally drink without
"worrying about getting caught by parents or the police. Really,
the only thing you actually benefit from by turning 21 is being
able to legally drink and buy alcohol without waiting on that
older friend to do it for you. *-
Now the last classification I know of is the age 24. Recently,
while working on my financial aid application, I discovered that
I'm not considered an independent, responsible adult. I was told
I couldn't be considered as such because I was under 24; I was
not married; I was not a veteran; I was not an orphan or ward of
the court; and I don't have a dependent other than a spouse.
For n^yself, and other students, this is a ridiculous and
almost discriminatory qualification. Since I have been a college
student, I h^ve been self-supporting and have not relied on my
parents' help. I thought I was an independent student for the last
five years and have shown responsibility by working to pay bills
and going to school. I guess that is not enough for the federal
and state government artymofe. Our parents, whether they want
to or not, are now responsible for us until the age of 24.
I was a little upset to discover this and called the financial
aid office to find out what I could do about it. The answer was
"nothing." They told me I couldn't be considered an indepen¬
dent student unless I qualified for one of the previously men¬
tioned categories. The only way I could try to get around this
was to cut all contact with my parents. I assume this means I can
never see or speak to them again. This excludes me as I do see
' speak to them regularly.
The financial aid office also told me a person could write a
letter to the director of financial aid explaining why they feel
ithey should be considered an independent student. The powers
that be in the finantiarfid office would then make a decision
based on that and knowing how theeystem works, I would bet
my or anyone's chances are slim to none.
As people grow up, they are told they will be an adult at the
age of 18, but then you have to wait until 21 to legally drink.
Theiv.you have to wait until you're 24 until you can be a inde¬
pendent, responsible student.. v
In the minds of the powers that be, this might seem a logical
way to regulate students who are irresponsible, but it really
hurts those of us who are responsible, independent and on our

They say you can be considered independent and respon- .
sible if you are married, but si nee when has being married made
someone automatically independent and responsible? This is a

pointed student, is not a vague
word. It is a scientific term. I've
never intended to be bashful. I
am trying to open the eyes of

The problem relies on the
fact that while attempting to
remain faithful to every prin¬
ciple of ethics, the left has failed
to get its message through, it is
very hard to ur wash these
brains. You must bring acid.
I hope that my lethal
weapons against those who
intentionally attempt to ma¬
nipulate the less critical minds,
indeed, will vilify them in every
way.
I am too sick and tired to
