The Daily Collegian—3 Grammys '95; a yawner By Khajag Zettuan • Staff writer "Did you see the Grammy Awardson lastmght?"Thiswould be the discussion I would have with my friends in junior high the morning after the awards. But as the years went on and the Grammys got more inane there was no need for discussion. Why did the Grammys get so boring? VVTiyweren'tmeperformancesex- citing anymore? Why did they let Michael Bolton perform? This year was just another re¬ peat performance of the last five years of the Grammys. Oh! Excuse me! Whitney Houston wasn't nominated. That accounts forother the same people get nominated yearafteryear? How many awards has Whitney Houston won any¬ way? And what about Bonnie Raitt?Shouldn'tsr«retirealready? All her songs sound the same and yet they still get nominated for their so-called artistic ment. My biggest, complaint about the Grammys is that.the baby boomer generation will not let go of their nostalgia. OK, Eric Clap ton is talented antfcmade some great progress in music during the six¬ ties but the stuff he's been putting out lately just isn't innovative any¬ more. The members of the Na¬ tional Association of Recording *-.*, »uon;m*ruY:&on>v A**3 ancl Sciences are mostly com- f?////////////^^^^ artists ge«ing a chance to receive prisedofbabyboomers.Thisisthe awards. Arent vol g main reason that more innovative and progressive artists don't get nominated or win awards. The biggest surprise for me ; this year was that Seal got nomi¬ nated for the "Album of the Year" award. Of course, he didn't win. Tony Bennett won that award for his flash-in-the-pan, pseudo- comeback album, "MTV Un¬ plugged." Tony Bennett? Come on! His association to MTV was kind of cool, but to get a Grammy for stuff that's sung at cheesy lounges and dinner concerts is pathetic. WelL^ince this is a music re¬ view column and I've done.... enough complaining about the Grammys, I'm going to recom¬ mend two CDs released last year that were ignored -by ..the Grammys. "I Say, I Say, I Say," Erasure's 10th release, was my pick for best pop allJum of 1994.. In fact, Erasure is my pick for beshpop Kings River Expeditions is looking for a few good people to train and hire as professional river guides. ability PREREQUISITES: Good attitude, to learn fast and work hard. Since 1985, Erasure has been consistently re¬ leasing almost perfect pop musk but has gone unnoticed by serious pop musk: listeners. Erasure's music has all the ingredients that makes pop music fun, danceable, e mo tional, impor¬ tant and disposable. Erasure builds three-minute songs that pull a re¬ action from one listening. It can either cheSr.you up, make you want to dance, or leave you-with the blues. Just slip in "I Say, I Say, I Say? and you're transported to a fantasy land where everything is perfect on the surface but is bub¬ bling with sentimentality under¬ neath. 'Take Me Back," the lead- ing track is a swirling techno-sym- phonic ode to be taken to a magi¬ cal land. "I Love Saturday" and "Run to the Sun" are thumping dance stampers that you won't be abie to sit stifl to. This CQis perfect partymusic, perfect bedtime mu¬ sic, and perfect driving music. It delivers sounds as delicious as cotton candy. '. The other forgotten gem of 1994 is Morrissey's "VauxhaU and I." Morrissey makes pop. music, albeit much more somber and less danceable than Erasure, but in¬ tense nevertheless. My favorite track off this release is "The More You Ignore Me, the Closer I Get," which is as infectious as the song title threatens to be. Morrissey has the talent to write and sing songs that are at once humorous as they are macabre and wrought with heartache.
