Huerta spoke at the Ted C Willis Corrur unity Center, last Saturday to an anxious crowd. She discussed among other things, Cesar Chavez and his lasting effect on us today. His, famous fasting, a tactic used by colleges throughout the state and country including the Univer¬ sity of California, Los Angeles and Santa Barbara; and Stanford. While discussing newh/.ap- proved Proposition 187, she proudly spoke of an earlier amendment the UFW helped defeat It was in 1985 when, then senator, Pete Wilson proposed an amendment that would al¬ iow illegal workers to come into the country, work for a time pe¬ riod, then deport them to their , native country when their ser¬ vices were no longer heeded. Huerta applauded those young Chicane* who have taken theirstand of opposition against Proposition 187 with walk-outs and protests. Students out there are feeling the effects of racism that is being promoted by gov¬ ernment, said Huerta. "Ifs" amazing the" people with the most energy were, in. mostcases, high school students and even college students." "We should make them [the government] spend as much money on our children in the com¬ munities as they spend on making golf courses... The youth is our responsibil¬ ity, they are our future." She also quoted an article recently published in the Los Angeles Times about a new proposal from a subcommittee of the Ways and Means commit¬ tee that would take away any public assistance, like welfare, from any legal im¬ migrants coming to this country. Reyes named Editor of DESTINOS yearbook By La Voz Staff r—*—— -,: Olivia Reyes, a senior jour¬ nalism major, was named edi- Xtor of thel994-95 edition of Destines, the campus Chicano yearbook. Her appointment was an- ' nounced this week "by Tom Unbes, adviser of Chicano Jour- i nalism Students Association which has published die year¬ book since 1969 to honor Fresno State's Chicano graduates. - Advertising coordinator is Virginia Madrid-Salazar who also announced that ad space reservations are now being accepted. "Our funds are raised solely from the advertising revenues," said Madrid- Salazar, former Destine* edi^ tor and current CJSA presi¬ dent "This is a good opportu¬ nity for campus offices to show their support for the academic success of Chicano students as well as demon¬ strate support to prospective students.'' She said all offices sho* dd have received an agreement form and a copy of last year's Destines. The deadline to re¬ serve space is March 13. "Reyes brings considerable talent and skills to her new assignment", said Uribes. She interned with The San Jose Mercury News last sum¬ mer and will intern with The Fresno Bee mis summer. She was managing editor of The Collegian last fail - She will also be one of 15 students nationally — two frcmrresndState-^^^ere^ selected to participate in the American Society of Newspa¬ perEditors' convention publi¬ cation in April. The other FresnoState student attending will be fellow CJSA member Cristina Medina, who was Reyes' Collegian editor-in- chief last fall and also writes forDestinos. Medina currently is a Bee staff writer.
