However, jvhen I think about if I would have gonesomewhere else, I real* ■ ize that I would have never gene to a school as good as Fresno." With that in mind, and the fact thatPapihad met head coach Irene Karris at several local touma- ^ ments, the decision to stay home was made. After two complete seasons, she, has compiled a2&-27 record. But there is more in the numbers than the average person sees. She was 12-18 as a freshman as the team's sixth seed. Last year, after starring out 0-7, she won 17 of her next 19 matches, including 10 in a row in WAC play. During tine season, at one time or another, she played in the fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh seeds. ' This year, Papi, at the number -\ three singles seed, and the num¬ ber one doubles seed (partnered with number one singles seed Marta Pitarch - who is ranked 63rd in the country), has faired about as well as the rest of the • team which was won just one of its first six matches. "Ifs been hard to start off the season with a schedule referring toplaymgnationally-rankedUSC and Stanford, and three Florida- based schools in a four-day pe¬ riod like ours," Papi said. "But I feel that as the season progresses well get stronger.'' Harris agreed. I • "She's so valuable to the team because of her work ethic, desire, and her care for the team as aS whole," said Harris. "Each dayy she gets more experience and she continues to develop** a player." "She really has improved as a^ player," teammate Amy Gallagher said. "I knew when she first got here [at FSU] she had a lot of potential to be a very good player. We alldid." "I just want people to know that none of this would have been possible without God and my family," Papi said. - And don't forget, a strong mind. Yeah, that makes a lot of sense. I mean after all, coming into this yeafite guy's only' got a 550-370. career record and a 6358 record at Fresno State. Besides, forget the fact that he took us to the NTT quarterfinals last year, and disregard the irrel¬ evant thought that he lost all five starters arid most of his bench from last year. Who cares that his team this year is made up almost solely of first-year players - the . guy should be winning the WAG Yep, as. far as I'm concerned, Colson should be out the door! • Obviously I am very sarcas¬ tic about my feelings toward Colson. This is the. first year that he's had all his recruits on the same floor and has been plagued with academic ineligibility and injuries all year. As it sa y s in the Sports Information release just about every week,, Fresno State is! one of five Division I teams to lose all five starters froinjast year. The other teams are Alabama-Bir¬ mingham, Delaware State, West Virginia and St. Francis (Pa.). Yep,, we all know what a powerhouse Delaware State has been all year; I guess ifs time for their coach to go lo. You know what, while we're at it, Duke is having a very year and I think it's time Coach K gottheboot! •Basically Mr. McEwen, if you think that Colson should jp for having a tough season, then you should be fired if you have a bad column- If a waitress screws up an order, she's canned! Give Colson a fair chance, and if he still isn't producing the wins, then we'l) discuss it. Remember, this rtime last year the UCLA'basket- ball fans wanted head coach Jim Harrick fired, now they're ranked sixth in the country. • .1 couldn't help but feel sorry for Kari Jorgensen after she missed N the lay-up last week versus Colo¬ rado State. I hope she hasn't blamed herself for the tPoms one- • point loss, but if it wasn't for the incredible effort she made that game the lay-up wouldn't have mattered because the score wouldn't have been that dose, t^Kari should fed like the hero in¬ stead of the goat The mascot basketball game that was played during half-time I of the women's basketball game vereus Colorado State was the best half-time show any Fresno State sport has had since I started cominghere. Seeinga larger-than- life Oreo cookie running up and; down the 'court with the Fruit Stripe Zebra was pure hilarity. This should be a staple of Fresno State sporting eyents, if for no other reason, because it brings a smile to people's faces, • I wonder if Coach Jim Steve R. FiijiiricHo/Tne'DailyXoMegian , Seeing a larger-than-life Oreo cookie mnnihgup and down the court with the Fruit Stripe Zebra was pure hilarity. " Sweeney is going for the quick fix Anthony Pelle, Khary Stanley, with the 28-Junior College signee Rahsaan Smith and last-year's he'sbroughtinfornext year. With seven footer Ken Rassi were all on a potential backfield of Michael the same team. Four seven- footers Pittman, Daimon ''Rock" Shelton, ^and Dominick Young, now that and Reggie Brown, the power T would be fun to watch. I f Looks like the Diamond Ttogs finally have an anchor at third base, and will for many years to come. Freshrnan Pete Hennecke showed that his bat is the.real McCoy last weekend when he hit his first homer arid triple as a Bulldog. The Bulldogs showed no weaknesses last weekend, and if we see any this weekend in Pilo Alto, then it will be more atesta¬ ment to Stanford's strength than our weakness. "^^-r^^"^- • Fma%,aprediction. Ihereby .state that the Fresno State men's basketball team will advanoefpast the second round of the WAC tournament If the team can play . to their potential, and if they play like they have something to prove, then this team can go places. If not, then they'll be on the first flight back to Fresno. Regardless, I can't wait for next season, when all necords are erased and we can redeem our good name. I just hope Colson is around to see it formation should be back in ef¬ fect in a BIG way next season • I thought baseballhead coach Bob Bennett said it would be mid- season before his teams bats would really come around? the team is in mid -season form now, and with their series against num¬ ber-one ranked Stanford this weekend, the Ttogs can move up the ratings ladder in leaps and bounds if they can take two of the three games. ' *V * • Isn't it nice that the most important games the Ttogs will play this season will all be broad¬ cast on 90.7 KFSR Today's gam* at 2 p.m. as well as Saturday^and Sundays games at 1 pm, wUl be brought to you by "The Director" Eddie Garcia and Andrew Pilger. • Don'taetitgotohishead, but Darnell McCulloch has the high¬ est shooting percentage in the WAC Why he is not a bigger part of the set offense is beyond me • Wouldn't it have been fun if \
