Few would expresssurprise to leam that yesterday's Super Bowl festivities provided the ra¬ tionale for alcohol consumption at apartments and houses all over town. But people across the nation are surprised at re¬ cent findings about the preva¬ lence and side effects of binge drinking at American colleges. A recent study from the Harvard Schqol of Public Hjglth, appearing,jn the Journal ofthe American Medical Association/. contains the first scientifically reliable national survey on binge drinking on campus. Binge drinking is defined as consumption of five or more drinks in a row for mery or four qr more drinks in a row for women, on one or more occa¬ sions during a two week period. Conducted among 17,592 students in 140 schools across the nation, the Harvard study documents the prevalence of un¬ dergraduate drinking, tallying a sobering 44 percent of students surveyed as binge drinkers. Only 15 percent of students responded that they never drink. Also, the researchers found that 87 percent of college students suffered from "secondary binge effects" that were caused by the binge drinking of others, rang¬ ing from insplts and inconve¬ nience to property damage and sexual assault. "The discovery of second¬ hand binge effects uncovers a new call to action," says Katherine Lyall, chairman of Harvard's College Alcohol Study Advisory Bbard.
