77: Tuesday, November 29, 1994 Page 7 Fresno State advances to post season with NIVC invitation After a year off from post season, CSUF volleyball • returns to NIVC \> By Casey Angle i_ _, i , In what seemed to be the ^end to a fantastic turn-around from last season, the Fresno State volleyball team will be starting a new seasorion Deo 2. In a season that sawjecords broken and career highs in kills, digs, and blocks through indi-' ^vidual and team efforts, the Ttogs came back from the long Thanksgiving weekend s^ill hungry, hungry for the chance to have their shot at the teams in the National Invitational Volleyball Championships held in Memorial Gymnaium in Kansas City, Missouri. The Bulldogs ended their season on the road with two tough defeats to Colorado State and Wyoming to put an end to their shot at a chance to go to the NCAA tournament. Fin¬ ishing 18-12, (6-8 in Western Athletic Conference play), the Bulldogs accepted a bid to go to the NIVC and are looking to; show the opponents the weap¬ ons that put them into their first post season since '92, when they also attended the NTVC and fin¬ ished the round-robin portion 2-2. Fresno State will look to conquer the 20 team tourna¬ ment as the only WAC repre¬ sentative. ' The WAC put five of its eight teams into post season play, with the top four spots, Brigham Young (WAC champ) San Di¬ ego Statft^Ngw Mexico, and Wyoming, all headed for NCAA play. The Bulldogs' record and opponents were obviously impressive to the of¬ ficials deciding on who to in¬ vite, when they skipped over WAC fifth-place finisher, the University of Utah. One player who should have no problem proving she belongs with the best is sophomore out¬ side hitter Tricia Tuley. Tuley w^s selected to the second team All-Western Athletic Confer¬ ence. Tuley's statistics stand alone with her 450 kills and 407 digs leading the team. Tuley finished the season second in the WAC in kills and has taken the WAC digs title for the sec¬ ond straight year. Attaining such an honor was no obvious problem, as the sophomore recorded double fig¬ ures in kills in 24 of the Bulldogs' 30 matches during the season, including a career-high 29 against Utah oh Sept. 23. De¬ fense and digs are her specialty as Tuley had 20 matches with double figures in digs, including a 30-dig night against Cal State Sacramento on Nov. 8. That could have been her best all- around night, when she finished with 11 kills, 30 digs and two blocks. However, one match early in the season that may top that one in many minds is the second match of conference play at home against BYU when she had 23 kills, 27 digs, and three blocks. In a 18- matches she hit double figures in both kills and digs. The Bulldogs begin play in the NIVC Friday with a tough opening match with the 26-5 University of Massachusetts and the Universitv of Arkansas (17- 15). They will wind up their round-robin play Saturday with Idaho State (18-9) and Iowa State (20-10) in hopes to reach the semi¬ finals and champipnship on Sun¬ day. CSUF finishes eighth at tough Vegas Invite By Dennis Claborn While most of us were enjoy-v ing the fine turkey, stuffing, and ' sweet-potato pie over Thanks¬ giving, many of Fresno State's finest athletes were on the road to Las Vegas. No, they weren't placing bets at the MGM's sports book, they were wrestling in the Las Vegas Invitational. The Bulldogs, who are ranked 11th in the country, fin¬ ished a respectable eighth place out of 26 teams with a score of 67.5 meet points. Other teams competing in the tournament included top ranked Oklahoma State and Michigan who fin¬ ished first and third respec¬ tively.. All-American Gerry Abas continued in his winning ways with a 6-3 victory over Bakersfield's Tony DeSouza. Abas claimed yet another title to add to his collection as he continues his pursuit towards another national toD rankine for the 142-pound weight class. Sean Kim, a 118 pound fresh¬ men from Gabriel Calif., took advantage of top-seeded Brett Bingham by defeating him ear ly on in the tournament.
