Nelson is also returning strong mis season, setting anew per¬ sonal record for herself with a mark of 66:10. Nelson also said that camp was a real advantage for the team. Training together early allowed the team to build unity and like Burris said, it gave the team spirit Nelson looks to the 1994 season in high hopes of making it to NCAA'S, a goal which many talented runners work for. Last season. Nelson showcased her talents at WAC and Region 7 Championships, placing tops among the FSU com¬ petitors and 16th and 39th over¬ all with a mark of 18:24. Close friend Burris said Nelson "is as strong as an ox" and is ready for the season. The women* team wiU be strong this season with returnees Liz Leigh-Wood, Kelly Jacobson and Sarah Dawson, who are add¬ ing depth to the Bulldog roster. The Fresno State men's cross country team is "better than last season," said Ricardo Brewer. Brewer last season alternated as the Bulldogs'top finisher. His . best performance of the 1993 sea- v son was at the WAC and Region 7 Ch am pionships where he fin¬ ished Hw personal best 3125/ which was good enough to place i 17th in the WAC and 36th in Regjon7. This year Brewer feels he has to work a little to be me top runner, while recovering from an illness that lowered his perfor¬ mance after his 1993 season. Estes said Fernando Mendoza and Curtis Alexander are in the best shape ever. Mendoza did well at camp by setting new personal records with a mark of 56^04 in the 9.3 mountain mile run and 1220 in a 11 mile run, Brewer said Mendoza is going to score well . this year for the team. Alexander is one of the Bull¬ dogs' strongest returnees. Alexander redshirted the 1993 season, but in the 1992 season Alexander set a two-mile record with a time of 9-34, ran at the No. 5 spot for FSU, posted a collegiate best of 2551 at the Stanford Invi¬ tational in 1991, and held abest of 421 in the mile, 159 in the 800 meters and 3204 in the 10,000 meters. Alexander, in this summer's cross country camp, came in first in the 9.3 mountain mile run in 55:43 and came in a close second in the 22 mile run with a mark of 1221. With talented runners like Burris, Alexander, Nelson, Mendoza and Brewer leading me way, mis 1994 season should be a big improvement Sports Writers Need t If you are interested in writing sports for The Collegian, • contact Robbie Miner at home at 291^9427 or at the e ac-278-57& TliMlkybu. ■BBBHMHHHHHHBHHH— Kennel Bookstore Demand sBEST School SUPPLIES se Supplies kers Engineering w- Z . ^§t**^i\ Mon.-Thurs..7:45a.m.-7:15pjn.
