Page 2 EDITORIAL* Friday, September 30, 1$94 IA VOZ COLUMN - o GJifonik^\^nimentpropos^ / reactionary legislation BY STEVE UCEA LA VOZ COLUMNIST The past 12 years of Republican! 'leadership" in the state of CaUromia, coupled vviththebBtfisequential decline of the state, has forged the path for scapegoating the Chieano/ Latino people. With the denial of real problems like jobs, housing, education, and basic human rights, The Republican Party, in particular, has sought to employ a scapegoating agend a. Have our political leaders worked on making our streets safer? No. All our "chosen" leaders have done is committed to building more prisons at the cost of selling out our shares toeducation, jqps/and genuine opportunity. This reaction¬ ary approach to crime is causing our state to go bankrupt. Sure we have more prisons, but are we any safer.. .dearly not. After my mother, daughter, or spouse is killed will any punishment return them to me? Will any retributive form of punishment ever make my life better? The answer to these two questions is clearly, "no". After the fact of crime, punishment of the offender is irrelevant to the victim, beyond the soothing emotional level of blood thirsty revenge. Crime needs to be prevented — period. Have elected Republicans increased our access to edu¬ cation? Again, the answer is unequivocally "no". Tuition at all state campuses from community colleges to CSU's to the UC's have risen at astronomical rates. Obviously, the importance of education is nothing more than lip-service in Sacramento. Just here in Fresno, the student fees at Fresno State has gone up over 190% under the Republican "education" Governor, and is going to go up again. Some people just don't give a damn about education! Now, exactly who does all this affect? It affects the poor. We have always been under direct assault, because we are easy targets. As soon as things get messed up by someone in Sacramento, they start blaming everything on us. They convince all the "good" Christians that the immigrants are bringing down their state. They claim that immigrants are causing all the crime. They claim that immigrants are hampering the economic growth of the state. Who are they...the immigrants? It is us. They are not talking about Canadians. To me people of the state of California, immi- ' grants equals Raza. We are thepeople under assault. It is always the people mat aredif ferent. In the South, it is African-Americans. In Nazi Germany, it was the Jewish population. Now in Califoittiayit is Raza. The constant element is the intolerant, bigot white man. He was there in Mississippi, there in Germany, and now he is here in California. Secondly, the oppressed are people that have a different cultural back¬ ground from the norm. They look different, act different, or they just think differently from the "white culture". Thirdly, the "white class" is angry because they are not as rich as they think they should be. They are struggling econornically, so they blame the easiest targets as the cause. In California, Proposition 187 is indicative of all I have mentioned. There are too many whites, who though not directly racist, harbor general views of intolerance. It is these fence sitting "dead" individuals who allow racist belief to hide. We must remember that not everybody in Germany was overtly racist like Hitler, and similarly, you don't have to Be Wusoh to be responsible for the racist rhetorical bashing of immigrants. By not being in total, open opposition to Wilson, you are responsible.... Proposition 187 is now before us. It is clearly wrong on sheer moral principle, but when has that ever been suffi¬ cient in American culture? From the genocide of the Indians to the slavery of Africans, citizens gave no thought to their actions. People in Nazi Germany were reaffirmed by the Catholic church mat they were acting in a moral capacity. It is history that stands as the judge of these , atrocities, and it is with pessimism that I concede that it may again take history to show the racist implications of reactionary legislation. Dear Editor, Marcus Tovar's article in the September 20 the issue of the Daily Collegian has to be the biggest load of invalid garbage that Ihave ever read in my entire life. His article about how the resistance to proposition 187 is yet another example of how the selfishness by small minority groups (Raza) is "wounding the harmony of America." Mr. Tovar - if you only knew our history , not the founding father crap but the true history, then the issues tha t the Mexicano / Chieano make is not a selfish ar¬ gument but a just cause. It is apparent that you know nothing of it since you do not know the meaning of Pete Wil¬ son being the real immigrant He is the descendant of those that crossed the Atiantic, while the Mexicano/Chicano can trace their roots on North America thousands of years before Co¬ lumbus was ever bom. You must not recall the time when the United States robbed Mexico of California and the south west to enhance their ever increasing greed and exploitation of the land's natural resources. Yes, our border was crossed, and our land was stolen, occupied, and never returned. If youeaiinot understand why we make a justifiable demand against Proposition 187 then you must not be a part of a people who have been stripped of their land, identity, and now our rights- not as citizens, but as the people's rights. Anyone like you vyho wants to prevent children from learn¬ ing how to read and write or to receive medical care when they may be neaj; death is insensitive and inhumane. Youmuitnotbe able-*) comprehend thi» for the value of the dollar must have warped your value of being a human being. Your artide in the Daily Colle¬ gian infuriates the gente forthe fact that what you had stated lacks any foundatioHof support. Your artide also breaks their hearts since you are of Latino descent You have made the anglo very proud of you in your attempt to be more like them and more ac¬ cepted by them by becomirig their little perro.
