CSUF swears in new police chief By Leah Perich It may only be a two-hour dis¬ tance, but for the new police chief at CSU, Fresno, ifs a world of difference. Willie Shell former director of Public Safet/atCaliforruaStatc University, Bakers field before he took the position of police chief this year at CSUF, said the new job is a much needed change. To Shell, the new job is a "breathe of new life into my ca¬ reer. It was so quiet [in Bakers- field] it was more like a retire¬ ment job." He said here is "a much busier campus [with] a lot more issues that need tobe looked at." And even though he does see some similarities between the two cit¬ ies, in Fresno he has "a lot of opportunities to do more things rather than vegetate." __*"Its all about making this a safer environment for students, facility and guests," he said. • Shell says he wants to deal with many campus needs includ¬ ing security in the housing area. ASI, from Page 1 After nearly 30 minutes of de¬ bates and conversation, the ASI board members chose to adopt the "Aids Quilt Resolution." The resolution calls for the first Monday in October to be annu¬ ally observed as "Names Project AIDS Memorial Day." The day will include the reci- tation^of those residents of the San Joaquin Valleywhohavedied of AIDS. The reritaubn will take place in the free speech area at noon. A quilt will also be placed on display at Selland Arena as part of the Memorial Day occa sion.The quilt will include names of those who have died due to AIDS complicated disease such as pneumonia. Next weeks' agenda includes the introduction of the Campus Children's Center staff and the resolution of Support for Human Rights. The ASI meeting will take place 3:30 pm., Thursday, in the University Student Union, room 314. \ V car theft, and safety with parking and office space. Before he tookhis job at CSUB, he served on the Kern County Sheriff's Department for many years with his last position being a Sheriffs Lieutenant. Shell said there are some dif¬ ferences in working on a campus as opposed to on the street "Ifs a different atmosphere. Its more confined and people are seeking a higher education. There is some criminal element,,but its more of a thinkers environment" Shell said the welcome has been warm. But in Bakersfield, some are sad to see him go. CSUB criminal justice and psychology major Stacy Davis said CSUF is "get¬ ting a very good chief." Davis worked in the CSUB public safety offife as a student dispatcher when he was there. She said he Was "an excellent person to work for."
