X Page 4 NEWS Monday, September 12, 1994 Critic finds 'Killers' disturbing ^A _ Tommy Monrcal —THE COLLEGIAN Don Priest won an award for "The Eternal Drum." Priest, from Page 1 -sissrppi, where he taught at a Choctaw reservation. Priest filmed the '89 Tewaquachi pow wow and de¬ cided to turn the footage and in¬ terviews into a documentary about the contemporary lifestyle of the American Indian. He re¬ corded the event again in 1990 and 1991, integrating footage of theTehachapi and Stanford pow wows from those years. "The Eternal Drum" sets itself apart from other documentaries about Native Americans because it's a modem-day interpretation, according to Priest. \ . "My personal pet peeve is that the media deals with Indians as relics of the past. This piece is about what we're doing now," he explained. "The Eternal Drum" has no voice-over type narration, be¬ cause Priest said he prefers that the video's subjects speak for themselves. "Th£y", in a sense, tell their own story. They have a culture they should be proud of," he said. Priest entered the documen¬ tary in the Tellie Awards, a na¬ tional competition for non-net¬ work independent films. "The Eternal Drum" won tirst place in the cultural documentary cat¬ egory. Priest had won a Tellie award previously for his "Video Cafe" series. He said the prize for "The Eternal Drum" helped por¬ tray the Indian culture in a posi¬ tive light "The fact that it was an Ameri¬ can Indian piece that won an award helps legitimize the In¬ dian community," Priest said. Think scenes like this ca# become more gory in an Oliver Stone movie? Well, ifs entirely possible. "Natural Bom Killers" is a vio¬ lent, graphic, loud, 120-minute heavy metal video. The story revolves around Mickey and Mallory Knox (Woody Harrelson and Juliette Lewis), lovers who enjoy brutal¬ izing the people they meet They find comfort in each other while they rob, rape, assault and mur¬ der more than 50 people during the course of the movie. Mickey and Mallory are the products of dysfunctional fami¬ lies, though ifs difficult to tell whether this is the sole reason for their murderous ways. Robert Downey Jr. co-stars as Wayne Gale, the glory-hound host of a reality-based television program called "American Maniacs*' The show profiles the Knoxes' slaugh¬ ter spree across the United States, turning them into media stars. The pair is ultimately captured and sent to prison. The warden (Tommy Lee Jones) plans to get rid of the couple, but a prison riot erupts during Mickey's interview with Gale, and the plan ends up in shambles. . ^ "Natural Bom Killers" con¬ veys the idea that the media are responsible for glorifying brutal¬ ity.
