4—N ews THECOLLEGIAN Friday, May 13,1994 : x^ VALENZUELA, from page 1 you turn out the light it's still just four walls and a ceiling," Valenzuela said. "Even though there's the glam¬ our and the glitz and aU that stuff out there- having a baby, a family and having roots you just can't com¬ pare them." Fresno is where Valenzuela was bom and he and has family call it home. He considers it a great es¬ cape from the rat-races of Los An- geles or San Francisco. When Valenzuela isn't performing he works as a private hospice nurse and it has been a demanding expe¬ rience that has brought balance back into bis life. "Here I was, this great 'rock' person but something was missing in my life." said Valenzuela. "I was out of balance. No matter how much you want to be a rock star life is not perfect Look at Kurt Cobain. The down side of it is you start feeling cheap and you feel like a whore. People start using you and I felt out of balance. I started doing nursing and it's brought me back to a bal¬ ance." Life as a nurse has been chal¬ lenging for Valenzuela and often limes painful. He has had to watch .people with cancer and leukemia . die right in his arms. ^ "It is not an easy thing to do," he said. "When it comes to somebody dying I know what I'm doing, un- fortunately. I say 'unfortunately' be¬ cause it's not something everyone can do; it'shard. Sometimes I come home and I cry and say, 'Why am I doing this?'...but it's because I am meant to take care of that person." As a member of the "On To¬ night All-Star Band" which in¬ cludes the legend Larry Gittens, bassist-Hank Sandoval and drum¬ mer-John Schafer, Valenzuela has had the chance to play with many great musicians like his old friend Bruce Conte from Tower of Power and harp master, Eddie Gordon. "As far as Chris Terrence, what be does I respect," Valenzuela said. "He has the only thing going in the whole valley that promotes focal talent whether it's musicians, au¬ thors, comedians or who ever. The concept is phenomenal and I've hung on because I believe in the concept and I believe in the bend." Valenzuela has been getting a taste of the old days lately. He performed with War at the Satellite Student Union a couple months ago and two weeks ago'played with War and Tierra in front of 300,000 people at a C i n co de Mayo celebra¬ tion. The *t)nTonigta All-StarBand" wiU be performing Saturday at the "Celebs for the Ampitheatre" at Woodward park and they wiU also be playing at Sluggo's Wednesday n^ght Things are looking good for Johnny The Stick" Valenzuela who earned his nick-name and a key to the city one night at the Paul Paul theater when Tierra played the Fresno fair for a record three years in a row. Valenzuela threw his sticks into the audience and the people started calling him'The Stick" and the name stuck. "The future?" asked Valenzuela. "It's like standing on a cliff and you're about ready to jump and take that plunge again because I know some thing's coming but I don't know what. A tour, endorsements...I don't know , but it's going to be good" Space Auiilabk Kennel Bookstore Attention Graduates Time is running out! Order your grad announcements today!
