w> Thursday, April 14,1994 THECOLLEGIAN Newi Letter, from page 2 and are trying to overcome our pov¬ erty by education for better jobs. Even though I am while myself, I am disgusted watching" my fellow classmates be immature in their judgments about other races, gen¬ der and religion. It is discrimina¬ tion, prejudice and racism. I en¬ courage students to attend the ASI meetings on Thursdays every week at 3:30 p.m. [in the University] Student Union, rooms 312-314 to witness the discrimination in per¬ son. These ASI members have voted, a $8 decrease in fees to be put on the ballot on April 12. However, they are real quiet about what will be cut in services and activities on campus. Since it is discriminating, there is a good reason why it has been kept quiet. They will cut the child care centers on campusfor starters so students must bring young child/en to class every day. All cultural and women's services , will be cut All cultural weeks and activities will be cut on campus. Some newspapers will not be funded. Lecture programs on cam¬ pus will- be hurt in funding. Club funding will be cut according to race, gender and religion. If a group is White, they will get the funding. Ifthe group or club is non-while or deals with women/funding will be T-" Frjesno State by any other name.. Editor. In response to Jeff Smith's letter (4/7): You stated in your letter that you were concerned by The Collegian's use of the name FSU to refer to our cam; pus. One ofthe reasons you stated for your discontent was that "FSU sounds like some podunk ' town no one has ever heard of and never will." While I dis¬ agree that no one has ever heard of Fresno—I have friends from all oyer the country who laugh when I tell them rim living in Fresno—I do agree that it makes it sound like "some podunk town." That's what Fresno is, a podunk town. You and I live in a podunk town. It doesn't mean that you and I are necessarily podunk-like, but wedoindeedliveinapodunktown. * The American Heritage Dictio¬ nary defines podunk as "a small, While it is true mat Fresno is no longer small, it is isolated (we live in the middle of a desert), and it is arguably unimportant Our impor¬ tance is gauged by many fellow Californians in that we have the worst crime rate in the state. You also stated that you are par¬ tial to the title California State Uni¬ versity, Fresno because you "liked the prestigious sound of the name." That is fine and dandy if you actually attended a presti¬ gious university, However, Fresno State is not a prestigious school. .. 11 is by no means the worst college in the country, or in the state, but it js not prestigious. Duke, UCLA, CaL.thcse are prestigious schools. Fresno State isnot. '> In short, Jeff, a rose by any other name is still the same. DaveMcNabola An equally concerned student ' cut It is discrimination and preju¬ dice in action. | One ASI member, Pete Nicholson, called our children "dogs," and die parents "dog own¬ ers.*' He called the much needed child care centers "dog kennels." This is uncalled for. One Reality member in the room said why she didn't want to pay for child care for others in fees. Shestated she doesn't have sex, so why should she pay for children's care for others? These statements are disgusting and un¬ just in nature. The truth is only $4 or an average lunch price goes to the child care centers, per school year so our classrooms can be quiet for learning. The other $4 supports our clubs, organizations, services and activities. In truth and reality, the $8 decrease in fees does not make much sense. It is a foolish move for us to allow in our activi¬ ties and services, j". For the child care centers, a LONG [list of students are waiting] and another site needs to be opened for die student population on cam¬ pus. So, on March 24 over 40 chil¬ dren and their parents came to the ASI meeting to protest and give testimony against the fee decrease. These ASI members listed above did not care but for themselves. It was still voted to be put on the ballot in a room full on angry stu¬ dents trying to project the rights of equal treatment for all to enjoy on campus. The students weren't only trying to protect us now, but for future students on our lovely cam¬ pus in &esno. Also, at the meeting, the Women's Resource Center had an excellent speaker come to our cam¬ pus to speak. The ASI approved it for funding without problem. Now, however,' the ASI members who belong to the Reality Party on cam¬ pus [haven' t released] the approved funding for OVER a month to the Women's Resource Center after frustrated, repeated requests for it. When asked why, no real reason ia given by them and only excuses. They try to stall the talking about funding as well. At one point they said it was still in committee after it had been approved already. So we CHALLENGE the Real¬ ity Party and those ASI members listed above to visit our much- needed child care centers and other cultural organizations. We CHAL¬ LENGE them to visit the services on campus as well.lt is not good to • judge foolishly or unwisely.
