X lmon THECOLLEGIAN Friday, Feb. 4,1994 Column Lose the Pub By Gary Kesselring THECOLLEGIAN Once agam another semester is underway at Fresno State, and aa usual, a'few changes took place while we were enjoying our Winter vacation. Sometimeschange can be a good thing, but it can also be a big mistake. Such a mistake has been made with the loss/conver¬ sion of the most sacred of gathering places, The Bucket. Remembering semesters gone by, hundreds of students (including myself) flocked to this favorite oasis to blow off some steam after classes, and some¬ times even before. The walls which made up The Bucket harbored us from teachers, tests, and the everyday stress of school. It was almost like going to therapy, except you enjoyed yourself. Unfortunately those days are gone and I know I am by far not the only one who feels so strongly about this. Our one social refuge, has been stripped away and converted into The UniversityCoffeehouse & Pub. I myself am an admitted caffeine addict and feel a special kindred with Juan Valdez. For those reasons I would have more than welcomed the addition of espresso, cappuccino, and the like into our family of beverages at The Bucket. But why does it need to be a "coffeehouse" to serve coffee and its family members? People will come to get their Java fix regardless of the name. Another change surely to upset the masses is the "upgrade" to microbrewery beers. How can you upgrade if they were already there? I'm an avid fan of the Tower Dark and the other Butterfield brews, but like everyone else, I have my financial limits. When you're low on funds, a pitcher of Bud Light or Coors fits the bill perfectly. Inexpensive beer is essential to the college student. In fact, I'm surprised we didn't have Natural Light on tap before. The menu was also changed, which Would have been nice to have some variety from the past four semesters. But how can you keep a straight face and order a glass of Bridal vail Ale, tuna salad on croissant,, and a scone? 4 What the hell is a scone?!? And why is it in a bar?! On, excuse me, Pub.^ I do tip my hat to the person that put the Philly Cheese Steak Sandwich on the menu, for they truly know what goes down well with the golden nectar. I almost forgot, Angel Hair Pasta comes with all sandwiches., Treschic. . yS Karaoke is out. Poetry reading is in. Okay, fine... *There once was a girl from NantuckeL.." Any type of artistic expression is great, but how about keeping both with a night devoted to each? Jazz bands are another possible addition, but because of the new environment, does this mean campus favorites such as Black Fry and Trojan Country Club won't be performing anymore? This would be a breach of our right to rock. These changes are supposed to be due student re¬ quests, but The Alternative (the new cafe at the Satellite Student Union) does what the Pub is supposed to be doing, but better. A few plants, posters of European cities, and an espresso machine do not make a coffee¬ house. If students wanted cappuccino, just serve the stuff without the attempt at trendy ambiance. What'snext? A mural of a French cafe and the Eiffel Tower? Don't be surprised if the next time you frequent our old wateringhole everyone's wearing berets, sporting goatees, smoking through long cigarette holders, and you hear the snapping of fingers (in place of applause) for Henri the poet £ > If I wanted to go someplace trendy, I would have indved to Seattle. I do not think the name of an institution should revolve around Welty gets too much money . Dear Editor 9 Tunes of academic crisis de¬ mand able leaders; leaders who are not merely proficient techno¬ crats, well-versed in the art of bu¬ reaucracy, but leaders who inspire the faith needed to generate sup¬ port and solutions. This is a time of crisis, and sadly, we at Fresno State are lack¬ ing such a figure. We all know, from daily experience, the sad litany of the woes stemming from budget cuts here at our university: Fewer teachers and staff, larger classes, outdated lab equipment and the seemingly e ver-ri sing price of tuition. ^ These are hard times, and we are all being asked to make sacri¬ fices and to carry a larger part of the burden. Except Dr. Welty. Dr. Wetty's previously meager salary of $115,956 is being raised, a whopping 8.5 percent! Now I am not one to begrudge a man, or woman, their success. I am sure Dr. Welty is a fine administrator who has worked long and hard to get where be is now. But as a leader of the university See SALARY, Page 3 sports. For example, many times I hear the football team called the Fresno State Bulldogs when i n fact that is incorrect A college should revolve around the academics; af¬ ter all that is why we have col¬ leges. The name California State Uni¬ versity-Fresno shows that we are a part of the CaKState system. Fresno State does not allow for this. If the name is going to be changed please think of changing it to California State University without the Fresno on the end. I come from back East where no one has ever heard of Fresno, but all have heard of Cali¬ fornia. Please let the school keep its identity with the Cal-State sys¬ tem. I really believe it is received in a more positive light One more thing... next time you or whoever decides to take a poll, please do not exclude students and faculty. It is the students and fac¬ ulty who make up the school, not those who give it money. Thank you Jo-Ann Scribner THE COLLEGIAN Keats Campus Building. Mail Stop 42, CSU Fresno, Fresno.
