X Monday, Jan! 31,1994 THE COLLEGIAN Sports—7 FSU ends road woes Women's basket¬ ball beats Colo- rado St. to get first WAC road win ever . y By Robbla Miner THE COLLEGIAN \ The Fresno State women's bas¬ ketball team accomplished some¬ thing Saturday night that they failed to do in seven attempts last year: win a conference road game. "I think the idea that we didn't win a league game on the road last year was in the back of our minds, bu t we weren' t real ly thinking about it much," said junior forward Holly Julian. Fueled by the hot hand of Julian, the Bulldogs defeated Colorado State 59-51 to improve their over¬ all record to 10-7, and their record in the WAC to 3-2. . Julian, who averages 8.5 points per game, made all eight of her field goal attempts, including 3-of- 3 from the three-point line. Julian also took command of the boards, pulling down 11 rebounds. "Offensively, I tried to be more selective," said Julian. "And as the three-pointers are concerned, it's something that I've really gotten comfortable with this year." Sophomore shooting guard Staci Oddo added 16 fo- the Bulldogs. Meanwhile, the Rams' leading scorer on the season, Teresa James, was held to only nine points. FSU has jumped out to an out¬ standing start in the 1993-94 sea¬ son, already equaling their win to¬ tal of a year ago. One reason for the team's success is the leadership of first year coach Linda Wunder. Last year under Bob Spencer, the Bulldogs were 10-17overall and 4-10 in the WAC. "I can't say enough about her (Wunder). She's just really turned this team around," said Julian. One way in which Wunder transformed the team was to switch senior guard Suzanne Zahasky to the point guard position. Enter¬ ing Saturday' s game, Zahasky was leading the team in assists and was second in steals. "Every game I'm feeling a little more comfortable in the position," said Zahasky. The Rams of Colorado State will be vying for revenge Friday night when they meet the B ul ldogs again at 7:30 in the North Gym. ALUMNI: Late then stepped to the plate and fended the game with another long shot off Grewal. The alumni may have taken the game light-heartedly, but McNamara believed that Bennett's crew had no intention of loosing. "We're just really loose, but they're going out to win." McNamara put on the spikes for the first time in a while Satur¬ day since he failed to be picked up by any of the professional organi- , zations last spring. The Bulldogs' former center fielder still works on the baseball diamond, but now as a home run wins coach of Serra Canada College, not as a player. "Everything happens for a rea¬ son and maybe that's why I didn't get drafted," said McNamara. "I always wanted to coach, so I figure I've just got a head start on things. It's been a rough summer, but I'm over it now." 14 of 20 former All-Ameri¬ cans made it back to FSU to take part in the activities. Major leagu¬ ers Eric Fox, Mark Gardner, Tom Goodwin and Steve Hosey were among those in attendance. "It's exciting to come back and Kennel Bookstore Everyday is a Ring Day! The Bulldogs open their sea¬ son this weekend with a three game series at home against Stanford. HAWAII: Har¬ ris leads. Dogs Hawaii's loss, coupled with wins by New Mexico and Brigham Young set up a three-way lie for first place in the WAC, with FSU only a game behind the pack at 6-3. "Fresno's right there lurking at .the top now," said Wallace. * Fresno State travels south Thurs¬ day to face San Diego State and then duels the Rainbows again in Hawaii on Saturday. . "You can't gee up the WAC yet, because not everyone has gone everywhere," said Colson. "After next week, you'll get a better pic- ' hire of things. Bulldog Bite Wrestlers sweep weekend foes Collegian Sports Staff After two months of battling injuries, the Fresno State wrestling team finally had its starting lineup on display over the weekend when Stanford, Wyoming and Brigham Young came to town. And the results were frightening. The Bulldogs (12-5) opened the weekend by beating Stanford 34- 2 and Wyoming 34-3 on Friday and coming back to beat B YU 27-5 Saturday afternoon. The Bulldogs only lost four individual matches the entire weekend. ^ Leading the way for the Bulldogs were juniors DeWayne Zinkin and Gerry Abas. Zinkin is ranked fourth in the nation at 134 and Abas is ranked third at 142. Both have missed time over the last month because of nagging injuries. While the Bulldogs as a team had an easy time over the weekend, Zinkin had to rally to beat B YU's Scott Eastmond on a takedown with 12 seconds left in the match. ' ^ Zinkin (19-0) was trailing 3-2 before the two-point takedown. "I ended up wearing him down and I was able to shoot in on him," Zinkin said. "I wanted to win because this guy is tough and he has been around for a long time. I will probably end up wrestling him in the conference finals." *""*"'^ Track and Field Three Bulldogs opened the 1994 FresnoState Indoor Track season with fust place finishes in their respective events at Saturday's Wolf pack Invitational in Reno. Kip Ortenburger made his collegiate debut a memorable one, winning the men's mile in 4:08.20. Other winners included Jamey Harris in the men"s 3,000 meters (8:19.40), Jared Wright in the 35 lb. weight throw, and Aw an a Brown in the women's 200 meters (24.62). Although not everyone on the team was allowed to travel to Reno, the Invitational was not an official meet. Since it was an all-comers meet, team scores were not tabulated. The Bulldogs officially start the season February 15 at the Cal State Bakersfield Invitational. ]\' The Fresno State wdmen's swimming team improved its dual meet record to 8-3 Saturday with defeats against UC Davis 60-34 and Pacific 58-38 at the Clovis West Swim Complex.
