December 1,1992 The Daily Collegian Sports-7 Co 9 ers face the Matadors By Dave Donnelly Sports Editor The Fresno State basketball team will open the 1992-93 regular season tonight against CSU' Northridge at 7:30 p.m. in Selland Arena. FSU leads the series 21-4 and has won the last three consecutive meetings. The Bulldogs won both their exhibition games against The Son's Blue Angels and the Russian National Select team while Northridge won its exhibition against New Zealand Friday night The Matadors are only in their fourth year. They disbanded their program and brought it back in 1989-90. Juniors Chris Ward and Andre Chevalier lead the Matadors. Ward averaged 18.8 points per game in 199L-92 while Chevalier added 10.3 points per game. • SeriiorsPeterMicelliandJames Morris back up the juniors. Head coach Gary Colson said that people underestimate the Matadors. "They are well, coached," Colson said. "Pete Cassidy does a great job. I was impressed with what they did at the end of last Colson knows what to expect from the Matadors. * "Northridge will want to run," Colson said. "We want to keep them from running. I don't want them*to get into the flow." Colson is looking forward to finally starting the season. The NCAA-moved the start of the season back to Dec. 1 because of a change in regulations. "It's time to get on with the season," Colson said. "Hang on to your hats." For the Bulldogs, Seth Marshall and^Brian Santiago will get the start DeAndre Austin has been playing well and may get the start at the third guard position. Colson is expecting Santiago to step forward. "I want him to take mo.e leadership," Colson said. "I want him to feel at ease. He's the point guard. To say the least, it is a proud moment for FSU basketball. As the 'Dogs leave the court, camera crews are trained on De Andre Austin, the Bulldog point guard who has been instrumental in the team's success. They're trying to get him to say he's going to Disneyland. But instead, he has all the BuUdogs at his side as he says "Me and the 'Dogs are going to the Super dome for the Final Four!" It just might happen. Whether the FSU men's basketball team will make reservations for New Orleans remains to be seen, but Austin w il 1 most likely be the key to the team's season and post season at point guard. A6'3,175-pounder, Austin has all but nailed .down the starting two guar^spot this season as a sophomore. He made an impact last' year as he saw considerable action in all 31 Bulldog contests. Austin usually played about 12 minutes a night and averaged 3.3 points, 1.4 rebounds and 1.1 assists per game. His off-season was dedicated to hustle and it has paid dividends in '92-'93.
