December 5,1992 The Daily Collegian Op/Ed-3 X PROBLEMS Continued from pa*e 1 .*. 1 WltNESSED FIRST-HAND THE POWER OF THE SENIOR FACULTY. expressed constant frustration at the "head in the sand" attitude of the full professors regarding changing anything fromtfie way it had been done during the Ve v i o us 10 years. Many times she had to keep quiet be¬ cause the. very same professors determined her tenure and promo¬ tion. Only since receiving tenure does she feel secure to speak out about changes to the curriculum in her specialty of elementary read¬ ing. Ask any deputy district attor¬ ney how many education profes¬ sors or school teachers he or she has excused from a jury panel on a peremptory challenge, in other words, one that can be exercised for no reason? The answer may surprise you._ A statewide prosecutor's or¬ ganization suggests in its training seminars not to seat educators on juries because they make up their minds quickly and once minds are made-up they are resistant to changing their ideas as the evi¬ dence un¬ folds. Indeed, my own expe¬ rience as a deputy dis¬ trict attorney suggests this to be true. I was burned by two school teachers who hung two different jury trials for reasons that made little sense. Both failed to follow the judge's instruction to base a decision on the evidence that was presented. While I am not defending any specific ideas of the dean or her lack of communication skills, I am very sympathetic to the problems' Dean Barbara G.
