XCIX t«7 CSU-Fresno Dicmem 7,1992 ADC's Simpson to speok on 'Women in Medio" By Rosalba Beltran StaffWriter Carole Simpson, a senior correspondent for ABC News and anchor of "World News Saturday,M will speak tomorrow at 7:30 p.m. in tbe Satellite Student Union on "Women in Media". She will be the guest speaker at the educational forum hosted by CSUF. Simpson has been a broadcast journalist for more than twenty years. She received her bachelor of arts degree in journalism Choirs kick off holiday season by Suzanne Andrews StaffWriter Christmas is here! The Fresno Philharmonic, joined by the University Chamber Chorale and the CSUF and Fresno Qty College Concert Choirs kicked off the winter holiday season with the "Sounds of the Season" concert at the William .Saroyan Theatre December 5th /ariS6u\ Opening the performance and setting a joyful tone was the debut of "Festive Fan¬ fare", by Central Valley native Robert Nielsen. Traditional favorites, such as "Silent ^ight","AdesteFidelis",arid"SteighRide" were performed along with several classi¬ cal pieces including excerpts from Handel's "Messiah", Schubert's "Ave Maria", and parts of Johann Sebastian Bach's "Mass in B Minor". Guest soloist Judith Dickison, who has PliASE SEE SOUNDS, PAGE 5 from the University of Michigan in 1962. She also did graduate work at the University of Iowa. She has also been a journalism i ns true tor at Tuskegee Institute in Alabama and at Northwestern University's Medill School of Journalism. Simpson began her career in Chicago in 1965. From 1965 to 1968 she wasareporter and anchor, as well as a movie amrbook. reviewer, .for WCFL-Radio in Chicago. She joined NBC News in 1974. She was named anchor of ABC's "World News Saturday" in June 1988. Simpson is also a frequent substitute anchor on "World NewsTonight With Peter Jennings'*. Abo her reports are regularly featured on the American Agenda segment in Jennings' program, in addition to "20/ 20". She has worked with topics and issues like battered women, children under stress, kids with AIDS (this story earned her an Emmy nomination), health cafe, housing, education and the environment. Simpson has also covered Capitol Hill . for NBC News and she was later assigned to cover former Vice President George Bush. StaffWriter "Silent Sleigh" is landing in Fresno on December 9 at the Fresno Air National Guard Base from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. to give deaf and hard of hearing -children a chance to tell their Christmas wishes to Santa in their own language. The program is specially designed for the bearing impaired, and will include a co-orful parade complete with live reindeer, . cartoon characters, and a marching band. There will also be food and gifts for all of the children. Silent Sleigh was started seven years ago in Fremont, Cabfornia by Mike Glad. Glad's inspiration for Silent Sleigh was his deaf son.Michael, who was five at the time. The event now also takes place in Sacramento, Riverside, San Diego and Fresno. Glad said that his philosophy is that December 24 should be the longest night of the year forevery child. He remembers how special it was to bira, and he feels that sitting . on Santa's lap is an important part of the Christmas experience. He wanted his son and other deaf children to have that experi¬ ence too, .and thanks to sponsorship by local Midas Dealers and Midas International Corporation, they can. Many other busi¬ nesses and volunteers are also helping to make the event possible Glad said that he expects anywhere from six to eight huDdred children to attend. "Seeing the chddrens' reactions to a Santa Claus who can sign is a heartrending expe- • rience," Glad said. "I asked a girl of about twelve what she thought of the signing Santa the first year we did this. She told me that .she knew it wasn't the real Santa Claus because he could sign.
