. 2—Op/Ed Wo ullje 23artp Collegian Wednesday, Nov. 3,1993 'Olumn Hong Kong in no danger of China's Communist ways By Mark Bechara staff columnist Hong Kong. By far the most beautiful and spectacular city in the world. From Aberdeen, across the harbor tun¬ nel to Kowloon, all the way out to the New Ter¬ ritories, Hong Kong's un¬ matched charmed out¬ shines the world. But, in 1997, a lol is going to change. The question m how much, and how _^ quickly. " Being born in Hong Kong and licing therealmost half my life, I empathize with all the 6 million, people who call Hong Kong home. In 1984, my family moved to live here, in the United States. Like many of the people who feared the inevitable rule of the Chinese gov¬ ernment. This fear stayed with me for most of my life until I began to analyze what was giong on, and make light of the real situation, past all ofthe panic. ' As most of us know, China is a communist country. It is a direct contrast to everything Hong Kong , Letter r stands for: capitalism, freedom, and unhindered trade. Of course the first emotion is to panic when one system (Communism)is going to take over a currentsystem (Capi¬ talism). But the fear should not be as tar ranging as it is. In the past _ ....... _ few yeajs Q,jna Hong Kong made **¥***?* 0 *""* under some in- billions, if not trillions of dol¬ lars for the United Kingdom, it will only do the same for China, under some in¬ tense economic changes. The .people are being exposed to the western lifestyle,- and the govern¬ ment is urging them to make a change (but not too fast). China won't transform Hong Kong, Hong Kong-will transform China. Although they are communists, they are not stupid. Hong Kong made billions, if not trillions of dollars, for the United Kingdom, it will only do the same for China. Why would China want to uproot a sys¬ tem that will make more money for them than any of theircurrent cities combined. "One country, two sys¬ tems"- this is exactly how it is go¬ ing lobe. China will not drastically change Hong Kong, for the sheer fact that Hong Kong makes too RWt STICK? SHIELD? — HELMET! — NISORV — MACEr - Letter ^^: . ,.,^„. Writer explains ASI issues Please see H.K. page 3 Dear Miss Bassoni and all other uninformed students of CSUftesno. I would like to address a small segment of the plenitude of questions and misnomers in the various letters to the editor. I would first like to correct Miss Bassoni on stating that Sen. Borges should do what heispaidtodo, whereas in reality, along with other reality senators are doing much more. This is based on the facts that 1) sena¬ tors are not paid to hold office, 2) there was a reason the agenda was voted down on the meeting of Oct. 28, and 3) AVP Licea and LVP Driussi receivea check or *'scholarship'*Hfoi''$350 a month and, last but certainly not least, 4) President Green receives a check or "scholarship'' for $400 a month (hint, hint, boys and girls tfdt cover tuition and books). The question has arose., thanks to the ineptness of Daily Collegian re¬ porter (Douglas) Stolhand's why the last agenda was voted down. Our own esteemed president Green issued a faulty executive order to install a sena¬ tor that, according to the bylaws that some senators pay attention to, was not supposed to be on the senate or other such activities. There has been torture,' mutilations, and gross human rights and violations in both countries, why, then, don't we see heart ren¬ dering scenes on TV every night from Angola, and Mozambique as we do form Bosnia?
