Wednesday, Nov. 3,1993 •Xfje ©ailr> Collegian News—3 'Learned Ladies' set to open on Friday By Brant Batty Staff Writer "The Learned Ladies,".a classic comedy, is the next pro¬ duction from the University Theatre -Co., and it is set to begin its run in a little over a week. Moliere's "The Learned La¬ dies" is being directed by Terry Miller and is Miller's first pro¬ duction in two years. After being on leave tor a year. Miller felt that the large cast of 14 people would-be a more fitting play for him to do. Miller had many Moliere plays to choose from, but decided on "Tbe Learned Ladies" because of its uniqueness. *I thought about 'Tartuffe,' but. that's performed a great ,' deal," said Miller. " ' the Learned Ladies,' I know is not produced that much; I also thought that this would be an excellent play to do on campus, as part of it is about feminism; sexual roles, and the battle of the sexes," he explained. The play was jfrritten in 1679 and is not politically correct, even in 19193. Intellectual pre¬ tension and education of women are also components ofthe play. Miller felt that many ofthe stu¬ dents would relate to these themes and even see some atti¬ tudes much like their very own professors in the performance. Miller said that even though this is not a modern produc¬ tion, the play will be effective because it was written so well. atm : I Wmmmmi if* ' il H : -*"-'" p^ ► ^*^m\\V?. Irl r - - Matt Soby/Daity Collegian The debate rages on in Moliere's The Learned Ladles'* over whether to give one's self over to marriage and love or whether It Is best to remain philosophical and aloof. Miller is happy to say that Garcia are very talented and The Daily Collegian is searching for an editor for the spring'94 semester. The application deadline is December 1,1993 in theSA$roffice, University Stfiideti&Vbtion Rm 3X& from 8 a.m. to 5p.m. Moliere was a fantastic play¬ wright who wrote some of the best farces ever. Of the hand-picked cast of 14, Miller has only worked with two on previous occasions. Although skeptical at first. Miller found all ofthe actors to be real leaders, and very fun to work with, and most have had a new appreciation of Moliere. Set designer Susan Allen, has been designing the set of "The Learned Ladies" from the first day of school. She, light¬ ing designer Marc Garcia, and a crew of students and profes¬ sionals, has been .setting the stage for the last three weeks. Miller said that the student designers such as Allen and have been given much re¬ sponsibility for the play to come together. The cast for The Learned i\ Ladies has been rehearsing \ now for six weeks, and Miller's 25 years of direct¬ ing experience is sure to make the performance very spectacular. ■ "Even though this is a classic, that doesn't mean everybody isgoing to have a dreary time. I think theplay is going to make you la\|gh," said Miller. The Learned Ladies will be playing from November 5-7 and 10-14 in the Arena Theatre. H. That takes care of the economical side of Hong Kong under Chinese - rule; now, what about the rights and freedoms of the Hong Kong citizen? the best way to have a person make you money is to make sure they are happy, and then make sure they stay happy. This way, they are more than willing tcnvork and work hard. Again, the saying "one coun¬ try, two systems" comes into play. China is going to allow the Hong Kong people to make money (if not urge them to make even more), and they are also going to allow the Hong Kong people retain their cur¬ rent freedoms and lifestyles, in order to make them happy. This way, China keeps the Hong Kong people satisfied, thereby leading. to more money and production. ChinaisgoingtouseHongKcngfo open up lo the world. Thepeoplein China are men before they are Com¬ munists. Most men want to make money as easily and as quickly as possible. China has more sense than to waste a good thing. I am sure that the Chinese government is more than will¬ ing to withhold the "wonderful" soctrines of conummist rule from a few million on an island, to encourage the ridiculous amount of money Hong Kong will produce for China. China wants to open up io the world, arid they are going to squeeze through Hong Kong. That is the bottom line. HELP WANTED HELP WANTED Customer service evenings free after 6:30. Sundays off.
