• November 12,1992 The Daily Collegian Sports-7 1 . i Red defeats white, 96-77, in scrimmage By Dave Donnelly Snorts Editor ~ Fresno State had its intrasquad game Wednesday night at the NorthGym, which is usually filled with acrobatic dunks and three- point shots. The game gave head Coach Gary Colson, his assistants and Bulldog fans a chance to get their first look at the Bulldogs under game conditions. The fans weren' t disappointed. Both thejled and White teams put on a display of three-point shooting and acrobatic slam dunks, however, the Red team defeated the White team, 96-77, in front of 2,124 people. Colson said the Bulldogs have a lot of work to do before Nov. 19 when the cagers play their first exhibition. "I think it was funsy time," Colson said. 'There were some things absent on defen.se." Assistant Coach Bob Hofman, who coached the White team, saw some positives. "I saw some good things but it's very early in the season," Hofman said. "More than anything else we're pleased with our depth. It's a matter of getting seasoned and see how it goes. The game marked the first as a Bulldog for several players. And they had the crowd buzzing. Sophomore Johnny Hines, who is returning after having to lose a year of eligibility because of Prop. 42, had a strong fust half. He scored the first four points for the White team. Ted Bull scored 19 points in the half after switching from the White team at halftime. Santiago also had 18 points. Hofman and Bull were impressed with Santiago. "Brian [Santiago] did a good job at the point," Hofman said. "He passed very well. He did a really nice job.w "His performance was actually average," Bull said. "He plays like that every day in practice. The people in Fresno will be in for a treat." Santiago said he had a hard time getting adjusted in the first half. "In the second half I just relaxed and had fun," he said. Bull and Santiago weren't the only ones to have impressive outings. Seth Marshall electrified the crowd with a couple slam dunks. He had 13 points. Colson was pleased with Santiago, Hines and Marshall because they hadn't performed well in practice. Please see RED, page 8 • Swim team defeats SLO, Alaska-Anchorage ' By Richard James StaffWriter In a tune-up for this weekend's action against national champion Stanford, the Fresno State men's and women's swimming teams won handily Wednesday at the FSU pool in the North Gym. Despite the fact head Coach Daniella Irle didn't go with her best lineup, the Bulldog men (3-6) defeated University of Alaska- Anchorage 71-24 and Cal Poly San Luis Obispo 58-37. The FSU women thumped Cal Poly-SLO 128-79 to up their record to 1-3-5. "We weren't going with our best lineup," Irle said. "We were very confident we could win with our best lineup, but I decided to give us a mental break." Against Alaska-Anchorage, the Bulldogs took the lead early and never reUnq uished it- They jumped to a 7-0 lead in the 400-meter medley relay, in which the *A' team (David Lyons, Garret!^ Nishimoto, Steve Madden, Mike Morris) won with a time of 3:38.52. The *B' team (Brad Russell, Scott Smith, Mark Thibault, Michael Yee) finished behind ^aska-aAnchorage with a time of 3:47.77. The Bulldogs greatly increased their lead in the 200 and 50 freestyle events. Brad Huebert won the 200 free by finishing with a time of 1:48.49. Dave Noble took the 50 free with a time of 22.62. This race was close all the way. Noble finished just ahead of teammate Ed Elste (22.72) and Dave Dennis (27.82) of Alaslra-Anchorage. FSU lead 29-5 at that point "Huebert and Noble did a good job for us," Irle said. The Bulldogs capped the win off with a narrow victory in the 400 free relay (Noble, Huebert, Elste, Steve Madden). The 'Dogs won With a time of 3:16.07. Alaska-Anchorage (Dennis, Steve Jensen, Nuno Castro, Steve Horwatt) finished at 3:16.25. Against the Mustangs, the FSU men once again jumped out to a big lead, but Cal Poly-SLO narrowed the gap in the later events. FSU had a 20-5 lead after throe events. The Bulldogs swept the 400 medley relay, the 1000 free and the 200 free. In the 400 medley relay (Lyons, Nishimoto, Madden, Morris) the 'Dogs won with a time of 3:38.52, just .33 seconds ahead of the Mustangs. Greg Snanley won the 1000 free with a time of 9:59.59, ahead of teammate Ron Lockwood (KWJ2.19). 'Huebert took the 200 free, finishing at 1:48.49, kist ahead of Cal POly's Jim Varelfas (1:49.92). But the Mustangs came back to narrow the margin to tour points after the 100 backstroke. Scott Gawel won the event with a time of 54.58. Lyons came in second with a mark of 55.58.
