/ Novemdir 10,1992 The Daily Collegian Op/Ed-3 -. i ' USA Today still lome (GXP) What does 10 years and one day equal? Normally the cor¬ rect answer is 3,654 days. But that's not the case with USA Today. On the day after its 10th anniversary, 10 plus one equalled a poorly written newspaper. USA Today wins plenty of praise with all of its color and graphics. There is notanotherpaper in the United States, or even the world, that is easier to read. But that's part of the problem. Making the paper so readable has reduced the quality of not only the paper, but of the news. USA Today's attempt to cover so many^ different issues (and not necessar¬ ily the most important ones) has forced them to reduce 90 percent of the stories to briefs. Unfortu¬ nately, four sentences on a story can never do justice to a story. What ends up is apaper loaded with lots of stories but not a lot of news. USA Today has found a way to reduce the number of stories .and make it appear that it is pro¬ viding depth—graphics. When there is a very important story worthy of several inches of cover¬ age, tlie solution is to add a graphic from the .story. Therefore what looks like a complete story on an important issue is turned into a short, yet easy to read, story. The graphic takes up the space that would make the story too long to run. It allows the reader to glance at the graphic and grasp the very basics. The problem with the graphics that they use is that they do not tell the whole story. If a graphic is used to express statistics, all it represents are cold, hard numbers. If it is used to show a scenario (such as an accident), it simplifies ' the situation. A graphic does not provide analyses and explanations that are needed to truly understand their meaning. ^ USA Today has made .so many important changes that have helped the market. It has forced other newspapers to realize that a paper needs to please its audience. Too many newspapers had fallen into unattractive grayness. USA Today lias made them change their for¬ mat so that the newspapers are more readable. But USA Today has gone too far. And Gannett, the paper's publisher, is discovering that. Even with a circulation of more than 1.9 million, the paper is not making money. It never left the red in its 10 years of existence. The newspaper readers of America have not profited from all changes. News has been re¬ duced to the bare facts, which are incomplete without analysis. Until USA Today decides to delve fur¬ ther with its stories, it will remain the paper for those who want to sound like they arc informed but really don't know what's going on in the United States.
