Hockey club team loses to SDSU, 7-2 By Todd Warshaw StaffWriter The Krafib State Hockey Club . lost to the San Diego State Aztecs, 7-2, in a hard game Saturday night After getting of f to a slow start, the Bulldogs came back and made a strong showing in the second and third periods. The .Aztecs scored five goals in the first period while holding FSU to only two shots and no goals. The second period was closer, with Martin Nielsen scoring for Fresno off strong play in front ofthe goal. The assists were credited to Jack Former and Mike Zavala. San Diego answered with another goal in the second, but the Bulldogs were in control for most of the period. The intensity picked up in the San Diego again Sunday morning third, with several fights, including and lost 13-2. one that sent several players from each team to the locker room early. Both, teams scored again, with Mike Zavala knocking in FSU's final goal ofthe match, assisted by Nielsen and George Grim. Player and Coach Wayne Arioto was pleased with the second and third periods, and said the problem with the first period is a lack of practice time. ' "Financial limits prevent us from getting ice time, so we only get on the ice for games," he said, adding that after a rusty first period, the teams were very equal. That is a positive sign for this season, since the Aztecs are one of the top conference teams. "We played well vs. a very good team," Arioto said of the Bulldogs' performance. The Bulldogs played SPIKERS COHTWUIP FROM PACI 7 region in the country, I think we're a final four team," Michelis said. Radmilovich isn't so sure. "I don't think they can win a national championship, but I think they can go pretty far," she said. Before this weekend, Vivas said that the important match was Saturday night against the conference's seventh place team, the Utah Lady Utes. If the Bulldogs had lostto Utah, it would have severely damaged their post-season aspirations and their hold over second place in the WAC. But, like Friday night, the Bulldogs (9-3, 15-10) started slowly and were behind 9-2 in the first game before rallying to a IS¬ IS, 15-7,11-15 and 15-3 win. J "We did what we had to do, but we're not pleased with how we played, assistant Joey Vrazel said after the Utah match. Vrazel added the Bulldogs had been on an emotional roller coaster ride this weekend with highly ranked BYU and seventh place Utah. Vrazel had nothing but good things to say about the Lady Utes, who the Bulldogs beat for the third time this season. "They're a very talented team. We've struggled against them every time we've played them," she said. The victory virtually guarantees the Bulldogs second place in the WAC and keeps their post-season hopes alive. The spikers have to be ranked in the top eight in the country at the end of the season to receive a bid. "We have to beat these teams, if we had lost it would have been a hell of a lot tougher," Vrazel .said. The match against the Lady Utes was the last on tire North Gym hardwood in a Bulldog uniform for Radmilovich and fellow .senior Suzie Regul. e* "It felt good," Radmilovich said. "It was real emotional. I had a lot of things going on in my mind." The Bulldogs end their first season in the WAC this weekend as they travel to The Pit in Albuquerque, N.M. to close out the season series with the Lobos and El Paso, Texas to take on UTEP. HARRIS CONTINUED PROM PA« J .seconds. He finished the race with a time of 30 minutes and 46 seconds. It was the 10th fastest time in school his*iry.
