4—N ews W$t ©atlp Collegian Monday, Oct 4,1993 Campus crime rate increases with city's AWAVA ■ t 1 M.any area crimes committed by teens By Dlpan Mann StaffWriter As crime increases in specific areas of Fresno, the overall crime rate in and around California State University, Fresno seems to do the same. V As lesser criminals such as vending machine thieves continue . to strike successfully time after time, attention is diverted from more serious crimes around cam¬ pus, f A contribution to the recent in- creasc in crime took place at 4 a.m. Sept,. 26 at the Taco Bell on Cedar avenue, just across from CSUF. According to a Taco Bell em¬ ployee who did not want to be identified, the dining room had been closed for the night, but the fast food restaurant's 24-hour drive-through service was open. "Some-girls were waiting for their order, when three boys, prob¬ ably in their teens, carrying beer. came up and started passing rude remarks against the ladies, caus¬ ing them to get quite irritated," the employee said. "The giris finally lost their pa¬ tience when the boys smashed a beer bottle against the wall, caus¬ ing some of it to splash on their car," he said. The employee said the girls in the car "decided to give the boys a piece of their mind." One of the boys then pulled a gun from beneath his shirt and fired several shots into the unoc¬ cupied Taco Bell dining area, the employee said. "After terrify ing a lot of people, the boys simply left without a word, disappearing into an alley next to the Bulldog Apartments," he said. "There was no car, no one waiting for the boys to help them make their get-away. Their boldness was amazing." Incidents like this are becom¬ ing more common these days and more often than not, the perpetra¬ tors are no more than 15- to 16- years old. "This is what' s most shocking," the employee said. "These people are certainly not college-going stu¬ dents pursuing a career. These are high school dropouts, misguided youth who have lost track of their aims, people who can't prove themselves to their peers with other achievements." Is this what we are making of our future? Guns, killings, bomb blasts shootings. The list goes on. John Summers, whose name was changed because be also did not wish to be identified, has been in Fresno for more than 20 years ' and said, "Fresno used to be really different. Shootings and murders were rarely heard of. « "Things havechanged," he said. "These days, hafoTyatlay goes by when one does not hear about a shooting or a homicide. Society has real 1 y become violent and there is no o.ne to blame except our¬ selves." /. \ ADDRESS FOR SUCCESS In over 50 countries, this is an address for success.
