Collegian Ne WS O Friday, Oct 1,1993 Night classes g.ain popuI;arity with studeni By Craig Robinson Staffwriter The clock on the wall says 7:30 p.m. An exhausted stu- 'dent stares, imagining a me¬ chanical defect in die clock which makes it move slower, even in reverse. It is well into tbe third hour of a night class in U.S. history, and. the students look battle- worn. What motivates these people to consume information long after most students are at home digesting their evening meal? Who in their right mind would voluntarily sign up for a three- hour tour of U.S. history, sta¬ tistics or English? Full-day classes, full-time day jobs and die-hard students might begin to explain the^growing popu¬ larity of attend ing night school. "I like night classes," said Katrina Henson, a sophomore psychology major and.'night school attendee. "I go day and night ... the night classes are more structured [than day classes] because the instructor knows how much has to be cov- ered." Henson, is no stranger to night classes; she has taken three night classes in her aca¬ demic career. Lena Self and Marilyn McGraw take advantage of the cool evening air to study their pyschotogy. Another kind of student is tbe kind who works full-time during the day and takes night classes out of necessity. Patricia Corpus is one of those students. A sociology major in her senior year. Corpus works 40- hours a week and is carrying IS units this semester. "It's not all older students like everyone thinks." Corpus said of her busy schedule. "Sometimes I have to change into my super- woman clothes in the parking lot." For every class of tired, hag¬ gard night school members, there is an equally devoted teacher at the** head of the class. Dr. Sidney Chang, who has been aproressorofU.S. history atCSUF for 10 years, prefers night classes over the day classes he teaches. "Night classes are .more relaxed, and the students are more mature," Chang-said. As far as why. some stu¬ dents are willing to sit through a three-hour lecture, Chang explained that night students are "longing for knowledge... j or have nothing to do at home." 1 r ■ -z : HELP WANTED DJ/ SOUND TECH.
