V. 2—Op/Ed TEfyt JSailp CoHegian Tuesday, Oct 12,1993 'QluTin NASA ate too f™p™ much of our tax money ) wcsm mstis... By Mark Bechara Staff Columnist For the past few months the only statistics NASA has pro¬ vided for the U.S. government and taxpayers is the amount of money they have squandered on bungled-up missions. I won¬ der, what on earth is going on. I have always been a sup¬ porter of NASA, but lately I am beginning to — .■ I Si have my doubts. On August 2, as everyqjie may remember, NASA launched the Titan 4 rocket, which just so happened to explode with a $700 million Air Force sat¬ ellite on board. Since then, NASA has fpl- ■ lowed up with a string of fail¬ ures. Now I am told that they have lost their most recent sat¬ ellite, the Landsat 6. Appar¬ ently, they were tracking a piece of "space junk," thinking it was the satellite. Well, there went another $228 million of our tax dollars. I ani more tan willing to sup¬ port NASA, if their projects ate reasonable. Right now though, America has too many prob¬ lems, and these problems need a lot of money to fix. I can accept a loss of a few million here, a few million there, every once in a while, on some unfor¬ tunate mistakes. But $2.3 bil¬ lion in tosses over a two month , NASA must not act like a spoiled little child. They shouldn't ask for money to finance ridiculous projects—we can't afford it! period, is hard to swallow— even for the spend-crazy Con¬ gress.! | NASA needs to reevaluate their entire system, goals and future projects. America doesn't have this kind of money to waste. What NASA needs to do is ask itself, "Do we need this now, or can it wait?" ~I know NASA is used to getting virtually everything it asks for, but with the type.of mistakes they have been making, I don't think -. they should,.or will, get the amount of money-they are accustomed to. The only good thing that has happened, or should I say has not hap¬ pened, is the loss of any as¬ tronauts. An¬ other accident . like-that of the Challenger would be the last straw! Although NASA has given science enormous leaps into the future, they too. must adjust to the times. America is having budget problems (in case any¬ one doesn't know), and NASA must not act like a spoiled little child. They shouldn't ask for .money to- finance ridiculous 'projects—we can't afford it! too many things have gone Wrong to be called "coinci¬ dence," I believe that NASA, in all its complexity, has ended up confusing itself with its own mind boggling technology. I'm sorry, NASA but you have lost my support -for the time being.
