Jf ribap, September 3, 1993 Hhe Uatlp Collegian O I N O N The corporate killing of your Fresno State The destruc¬ tion of our campus is well under way into the new miliaria. Students are to blame for bringing big business to a growth-oriented campus. The problem stems from lack of understand¬ ing and appre¬ ciation of CSUF. GEORGE CONSTANTIN0P0ULOS Managing Editor You are killing Fresno State University. That four "fast-food" joints newly opened for the Fall semester at CSU Fresno tells us about our campus destruction. Subway, Taco Bell, Carl's Jr. and China Sta¬ tion have squatted on CSUF's Food Services facilities, kicking out any identity with the university and providing intersection/city blight right here. It was nice to come to school, located sur¬ prisingly enough right on huge Shaw Avenue, and not be confronted with corporate America boardroom hysterical visions paranoia. Con¬ gratulations, we now have real junk being served up on the university, and it's not the food. The food that Food Services dispensed may not have always been appealing. Supposedly, students demanded that the new Fast Food Four would be better than the existing Coun¬ try Store/Pit/Bucket/Cafeteria quadumviate. One could argue that a pizza franchise was already in operation here and we had a fran- chised frozen yogurt stand as well. We should have expected China Carl's Taco Subway Station to storm the beaches of Moo U. We were already selling Snick¬ ers bars and Sprite sodas, so obviously a double sweet and sour roast beef and turkey club served on crisp tortillas with soy ketchup. This came about because the 19,000 enrollment let it happen. In page 11 of the CSUF "Plan for the '90s" prepared for the Office of the President (Dr. John Welty), three points are offered under the 'university's areas for improvement' that point to student apathy and derelic¬ tion in the demise of our campus: "Lack of student involvement in uni¬ versity life beyond the classroom," "stu¬ dents' perception that some services are of low quality" and "insufficient pride in the physical appearance of the campus." The task force that prepared the report was on target. But how did the students, YOU, get more in¬ volved in the univer¬ sity? You brought corporate America in, destroying the little autonomy you in your youth can enjoy before going out into your bleak capitalist mortality. You were not satis¬ fied with a little crammy food on campus. You were not satisfied that these same fast food operations litter the Fresno community. You were not satis¬ fied in keeping them off. You lazy pigs couldn't get in your car to go to them and eat to your bodily decay. You collaborated with an arch-conser¬ vative hamburger pusher who would like you to lose your personal freedom and choice for women. Not only did you let him take over the Cafeteria, you eagerly hand over your money like an idiot. You don't have pride in the CSUF campus because you do not have an beauty inside you.
