Texas - The 25th ranked Fresno State football team opened the 1993 season in a heartbreak fashion, falling to Baylor 42- 39 In both team's season opener. The Bulldogs, who had a 20-0 second quarter lead and a 33-14 halftlme lead, were outscored 28-6 In the second half. The loss to the Bears knocked the Bulldogs out of the Associ¬ ated Press Top-25 rankings. "We ran it right to the last play.- Bulldog coach Jim Sweeney said. 'Our kids never quit, they're going to be fine." After quarterback J.J. Joe hit Marvin Callles for a 65-yard touchdown pass to give the Bears their first and only lead at 42-39. the Bulldogs got the ball on it's 20-yard line needing a touchdown to win with 1:59 left. Flanker Malcolm Seabron and defensive back Sam Watson were injured on Saturday. Seabron suffered a dislocated shoulder in the first half and will be out for three to six weeks. Watson's status was uncertain after his injury. Watson's loss really hurt a lot. Freshman Omar StoutmJreplayed as well as can be expected for a student-athlete making his first appearance in Division I football. Where's the Improve¬ ment? The Bulldog defense allowed 276 yards rushing to Baylor. This was after the Bulldogs stuffed the option and forced the Bears to play up-ihe-middle grind it out football. The secondary also had their problems. They gave up 283 yards passing. So much for a bad arm. Flowing Rivers-Senior running back Ron Rivers had 12 carries for 75 yards. Notes, see page 7 DCSTaMT If John Bluem was going to be satisfied with a split of a season-opening road trip to^he south, imagine what he thinks of a sweep . That's what he's coming home with after Fresno State (2-0) upset eighth-ranked UC San Diego. 5-1, Monday afternoon in San Diego. Forward Jason Berg had two goals and an assist for the 'Dogs while his Uncinate. Donovan Martinez also added a goal. Sterling Wescott and Mark Foster also scored goals for FSU. Junior goalkeeper David Kramer was stingy In goal, making four saves. Bluem was pleased with the win and said that one of his goals during the preseason was to get the Bulldogs to create more scoring opportunities and score more goals. It seems to be working so far. He also said the team did have things to work on still. Saturday in the sea¬ son-opener in Irvine, the Bulldogs once again beat up on UC Irvine 3-0. It was the first season- opening win for third-year coach Bluem. It was also the Bulldogs 13th consecutive victory over the Anteaters in 13 tries. Berg. Wescott and Donovan Martinez scored for the Bulldogs while Kramer added nine saves. The Bulldogs scored eight goals in their first two games, an average of four a game. Last season it took Fresno State five games to get eight goals. The Bulldogs will continue on the road this weekend when they travel to Fullerton to compete in the Titan Classic.
