DAVID DONNELLY Sports Editor The option offense has given the Fresno State football team fits in the last three years. Last season, the Bulldogs traveled to Corvallis to face lowly Oregon State. Oregon State looked anything but lowly against the Bulldogs and soundly defeated FSU 46- 36. Trie Beavers gained 470 yards rushing. Head coach Jim Sweeney and the Bulldog defense came home embarrassed. In 1990. the Bull¬ dogs were buried by Northern Illinois 73-18. another team that utilizes the option. And tomorrow night, the Bulldogs, ranked 25th in the nation by the Associated Press to begin the season for the first time ever, will open the season against Baylor at 5 p.m. PDT in Waco. Texas in the first of five contests against option offenses. "It's going to be a good challenge for us and were looking forward to it." said Brad Bell, defen¬ sive end. It will be a match-up of two teams that have gone lo bowl games the previous two years and the first time the two teams have hooked up on the gridiron. After almost two weeks of practicing against the option. The 'Dogs will be taking on Cal Poly-SLO. Cal State Fullerton. San Jose State, and Texas A&M in the two-day round-robin tourney that begins today. The spikers face San Jose State at 3 p.m. in their first matchup. The Bulldogs also face Cal Pory-SLO at 7:30 p.m. tonight then come back for matches with Fuller- ton at 3 p.m: and Texas A&M at 7:30 on Saturday. "It should be a real even tournament," said Bulldog head coach Lindy Vivas. Vivas Is In her third year with the Bull¬ dogs and has put together a 42-27 record with two straight postseason bids—the first back-to- back bids FSU history. "Cal Poly comes back and they're always a good team. They're a little smaller and faster than everybody else. That's a good challenge, because they hate us and we don't like them." "San Jose State is another big rivalry. Texas A&M has a new coaching staff and "It should be a real even tour¬ nament. Cal Poly-SLO comes back and they're always a good team." Lindy Vivas Improving (because of the restrictions lifted on younger athletes). I expect A&M, starting this year and years to come, to have great teams. Fullerton used to be a Big West rival and they're rebuilding." Assessing this year's Bulldogs. Vivas says: "Offensively we can do more and definitely defensively. We have that quickness, so we haven't had to stress as much defense in drills. The last two years, that's been something we've had to work on." "It's just a much more mature group. We were somewhat young last year and quite a bit immature. This year we are young again and much more developed and that's really helped us." FSU returns three starters from last year's 21 - 14 NP/C Tournament team. Senior middle blocker Jennifer Craw Is the team's leading returning blocker and hitter from last season. Craw had 116 total blocks and 342 kills in 35 matches. Nicole Chen, perhaps the Bulldogs' most skilled all-around player, put up consistent numbers ail year in '92. with 346 digs. 256 kills. 37 blocks and 22 service aces. "I have no doubt that Craw and Chen will fill the Spikers, see page 7 Soccer team opens at Irvine CHRIS COCOLES Staff writer A split of a season opening road trip will satisfy Fresno State soccer coach John Bluem. But the third-year coach won't be disap¬ pointed should his Bulldogs sweep UC Irvine, a team Fresno State has never lost to (in 12 overall meetings), or No. 8 San Diego, who reached last season's NCAA title game. Bluem sees a win at Irvine on Saturday as crucial, considering the Bulldogs are playing the highly-regarded Toreros for the first time in a regular season game. "We don't have to beat Irvine, see page 7
