t£ 2-—Opinion The Daily Collegian Thursday, April 1,1993 LlETTERS Very scared Dear Editor, _ The leftists on this campus have gone well beyond being called "liberal" or "progressive," they have earned a new name: Supermen and Superwomen (I know the women should come first, but I'm not politically correct), because they can see things no mortal can possibly see, like a person being a "sexist," "racist," or any other "ist" that may imply. They can also see into the recesses of a person's mind to find out the motive behind any activity. This is regarding the ASI Senate meeting where two senators were going to be suspended (not impeached) for failing to pay their bill for using the ASI copy ( machine to run off about 12,000 fliers. It was slated'that the motive behind this attempt was' to gain control of the Finance and Budget Committee. It was also supposedly an attempt to attack "people of color and women because these are the people we represent" I didn't know that the School of Health and Social Work was comprised solely of women and minorities. I have some male friends that will be perplexed to find out that they either are not in that school or that they. are women. As for Phillips, I believe she is a Senator-at-l.-Jge and therefore represents the entire student body, even white males. And who are her "constituents and their funding that will be affected?" It is scary when we elect people to represent the whole campus and they end up looking oat for the welfare of small special- interest groups on campus. The real reason for the action: These Senators refused to pay their bills for abusing the ASI photo¬ copier. It is as simple as that. • • They (and their groupies) have stated on previous occasions that there is no authorization in the by-laws to force the two senators to pay their incurred debt There is, however, and it will happen- But of significant importance was a speech by a member of the gallery questioning that if the campus was so outraged about the alleged incident, why weren't they at the meeting. Obviously, someone needs to inform him what purposes the elections serve. It is called representational government. It is a simple concept: If you want something expressed, you just contact your representative and he/ she will comply. Therefore, there is no need to waste time by attending a meeting where you are already spoken for. I Another interesting point was made by a spectator in the gallery claiming that she had paid $16 dollars a semester over the past five years giving her ownership of the copy machine, the building, and the chairs that were in the room. I can't believe how blind I've been over the years while I was at Fresno State. Where else can you get such a return on an investment? You pay $16 in fees and this allows you to copy $600 worth of fliers. What a system! This is what the leftists on this campus thinks your money is for. It should sound familiar. "We take your money and we then give it to whom we think should really have the money." No wonder there was an attempt to reduce how 1 much money these fools got to distribute among their "constituents." If this is how these "s.c.a.r.e.d." people want to run the ASI, you should be scared. Very scared! P.S. The vote of confidence was 6-4-5, which is a failing vote, considering that abstentions are supposed to count as negative votes. Paul J. Crews Senator, School of Social Sciences Result and effect Dear Editor, Rally for the cause and make history. Friday starting at noon in the Joyal Building. Support equals the most important thing you can do. Result equals Channels 30,26,47,24, 21 coverage. Effect equals state-wide coverage to tell all the UC. CSU and community colleges to con verge on Sacra¬ mento all of this weekend and week to have our Spring Break fun and tell them we are the largest voting block in the state and we are not going to be the scapegoats for the California budget. We are mad as hell and we're not going to take it ' anymore. ;- V'• ) The rally will be a show of support and we will discuss car pools, etc. " Also on KFSR Saturday (9 -10) we will discuss car pools and meet at Joyal footsteps everyday during next week to converge ourselves on Sacramento. Also suggestions on supplies, timing, etc. Afford K. Stewart Determining the issue Dear Editor,- I am writing in immediate response to the circus that occured at the ASI Senate meeting this past Tuesday. I have never seen such a colection of misguided, or rather craftily manipulated, fools in all my life. They were arguing based on emotion. A third-grade-level course in basic arguments could have helped them immensely. The first thing they would have learned is determin¬ ing the issue Stated plainly, the issue was the flagrant violation of ASI by-laws. I'm sure a lot Of die people in the gallery were probably misinformed about the issue at-hand, but this too is something that could have been learned in basic reasoning class. Thislssue was not a financial one, beyond the paying of the incurred debt. If it is okay for senators to do as they please without accountability, then please let me know, so lean stomp around free from my responsibility. «. People brought up the issue, of ethics. This was the main problem. The two senators acted'irresponsibly, unprofessionally, and unethically by shattering established by-laws. It is unfortunate that the two senators in question are in need of a brain to share between them, but that does not release them from responsiblity. Equally embarassjng was the fact that at least one thirdpf the senators were being milked like cows by the less intelligent members of the gallery. I am open to ideas from the gallery, but only When they are substantiated by the facts; not emotions. It is no wonder that people have lost faith in the ASI.
