Column From page 2 "A fascist," said Karl, and landed a lung cookie the size of a half-dollar- squarely in the center ofHesfon's star. \ - .: . We met DB when he tried to panhandle change for beer from us on the way. to one of the few liquor stores in Hollywood still open at 1:30 in the morning, i and decided to buy him a quart of King Cobra malt liquor. He told us that he had been booted out of a nearby resi¬ dence hotel a couple days before, where he had been- paying $10 a day for a room, and had to scrape up $32 to get his belongings back from the manager, who was holding them as collateral. "Let me show you my house," saidDB, leading us to an empty parking lot behind an appliance shop around the corner from the liquor store. He pointed to a washing machine carton set between a green dumpster and a crum¬ bling cinder block wall. The box contained a pillow and a damp looking blanket. "That's my bedroom," said DB, pointing at the box. "That fence there is my John, and this is my living room," he said, making a sweeping motion around the lot. Water draining from the roof of a nearby store from the early morning acid fog drummed against the dumpster in a syncopated beat as the four of us sat in a circle on pieces of tom cardboard and sipped our beer. "It's actually pretty quiet here," DB said. "There was a • shooting back toward Gower a couple days ago, but I really don't get messed with much here, even by the cops." ( ■ He told us that he had moved out to Hollywood from Queens the year before to work for a construction company, but the winter slowdown had left him without a job and strapped for money. "Yeah," he said. "I'm hoping to get up enough cash to make the bus trip back to New York..." He stopped, took a, swallow from his beer and looked at me with a surprised expression, as if he had just realized that I had been sitting in my, spot the whole time. "You a Korean?" he said, his face turning grim.' "No, I'm Japanese." I said. "What are you?" . , "Irish and black," he said. "Good mix," I said.' ' "Yeah," he said. "You be careful though. Some people won't stop to ask around here. - Especially after the riots." "It was pretty crazy out here," Joe said, his mouth crammed full of Budweiser and porky bits. T7 .V . "Yeah," said DBv^Too \ crazy." We got up and DB walked with us across the 101 over¬ pass. "I know thishtdy who'll let me camp jit/her place and let TiTsHower," said DB, turning down a side street.
