Census figures from 1990 indicate that Hispanics are underrepresented jn faculty positions. Only 54 of 751' "* • faculty (7 percent) three years ago were Hispanic. About 25 percent of the total staff was Hispanic at that time. Welty became president in 1991, so we'll have to wait and see if hiyfejiure has improved numbers. His past efforts indicate that Kaleidoscope's resignation demand may be premature. While presiding over Indiana University in Pennsylvania, Welty started a broad .liberal studies curriculum featuring critical thinking, ethnic studies and culturally diverse courses. He also added a'rninority affairs officer to his administra¬ tion. At CSUF, Welty recently redefined^ the goals of his Task » More f act-finding Force on Human Relations and Equity, which hadn't done much m its first year. As hard as it is to praise the leader of a financially strapped university, I find it harder to believe that he is a con spi rat or attempting to get rid of Hispan- Welty should do everything he can to give underrepresented students, staff and faculty a shot at success even though the university is struggling. These underrepresented peo¬ ple should in rum give Welty a chance to help the university . through this budget mess. Dear Editor, I am responding to an editorial that appeared on Tuesday, February 16, entitled "Sexism in the Senate." The editorial failed to mention-some facts which may give a slightly different picture of the recent events in the United States Senate. The question of domestic household fcelp was not asked of any potential Clinton appointee. The only reason that the issue waj even raised was because Zoe Baird informed members ofthe ' Clinton transition team and the Senate Judiciary Committee. The point is, unprofessional reporting such as this gives the .general public a false ideaof . what goes on in agriculture. We, as agriculturists, whether- cowboys or aggies, have enough problems within the public eye with politicians, environmentalists, etc. We ^ don't need help from the Daily Collegian's incorrect reporting of agricultural events. In the future it would benefit fSg all that your reporters research their topics before publishing it in the Daily Collegian. «<^ L.
