2 — Opinion Commentary Campus starvation By Jason Terada The air in and around CSUF must be nutritious. I've come to this conclusion after observing how healthy students at the university apparently are, despite their diet. k If the Roper Company conducted a poll in an attempt to find out what most students who don't live at home eat, and how often, they'd probably come away with the notion that many of them aren'tfar away from reliving the movie "Alive." An inventory of the pantries and larders of most "independent" college students will more than likely \ reveal an inordinate quantity of Top Ramen, Kraft Cheese and Macaroni, microwave food in plastic cups, pasta, Dinty Moore Beef Stew and canned beans. It's a good thing the USDA insisted on farmers enriching flour and other cereal products with niacin and other nutrients. Add some powdered milk, and you^d think you were looking inside one of the care packages being para¬ chuted down to besieged Bosnians in Sarajevo. Overall, I think it's a matter of economics. *" Most students really can't afford to buy porterhouse steaks that cost $4.50 apiece. Many of them can't afford cube steak or hamburger. There exists the distinct possibility that Budweiser and Miller Genuine Draft contain a lot of B-complex vitamins and protein. Maybe students eat out a lot, but if that was the case then students would have enough money to buy groceries. Unless they can't cook. Students who live in the dorms don't have it much better, although they eat regularly, courtesy of the Residence Dining Hall. My singular experience with RDH food taught me that there are at leastlOO ways to incorporate peas, corn and carrots into a meal, including casseroles, pot pies and anything else including bread, pastry dough or starch fn the recipe. At the same time, die food there isn't much different than what you'd get at the World Famous Hometown Buffet in Clovis, and the line there looks like what you'd find at a premiere of the latest movie starring Macaulay Culkin. • V. The cost of admission to Hometown isn't much different, either. V Someone, like a graduate student looking for a thesis project, should conduct a study to find out how close students at CSUF and other universities are to outright starvation, although it may be>a moot point for those of us who diet regularly or suffer eating disorders. Better yet, the ASI should include a Costco card with their fee as part of a package deal. Ik, Most students" would probably find one of those a lot more useful than discounted basketball tickets. The political cartoon in the Monday, March 1, issue of the Daily Collegian, while perhaps making a valid point about terrorist publicity, is offensive on two counts at least. It offends by which ethnic groups it includes and by which it omits. The artist unfortunately panders to anti-Moslem, anti-Arab prejudices by making these groups the predominant villains, albeit With a token nod to "Bosnian nationalist" individuals. Why not include Basque separatists t>r IRA bombers as part of the picture of ethnic groups who resort to violence and death for making political points? The cartoon rightly spotlights the issue while unfortunately focusing on some easy targets for our own cultural prejudices. -^ Father David Norris Catholic Campus Minister St. Paul's Newman^enter Immigration control Dear Editor, ^Tm writing about a serious matter that concerns all college and university students, especially those in California. As you probably know, an estimated 2 million illegal aliens enter our country annually. This is in addition to 800,000 legal immigrants and hundreds of thousands of refugees and "visa visitors" (those who overstay their legal status). I'm sure you're also aware of the budgetary prob¬ lems of the state of California Governor Wilson and members of the California congressional delegation are trying to get the federal government to make good on its promises to reimburse California and other states for the costs of social services, welfare programs, Medi-Cal and other expenses incurred by illegal aliens, legal immigrants and refugees including those who became citizens of the United States through the 1986 law granting amnesty. . f The governor is seeking $1.45 billion for this, but it seems unlikely to be forthcoming. But.even this amount is far short of the cost to California resulting from our country's lack of immi¬ gration control. Our State Auditor General estimated the state and local costs of illegal immigration to California to be approximately $3 billion. That is probably an underestimation, since the Mark Antonovich Commission founa fte cost of illegals to the County of Los Angeles alone to be almost $1 billion last year. Fee increases recently .are only too painfully recog¬ nized by students now, with the prospect of more increases soon. Student pjotestations against them are expected, and I'm greatly in sympathy with that.
