I am writing in response to a letter to the editor |Nov. 8) by Mr. Steven J. Bums. I am not writing to insult dormmate Bums. The reason ! am writing''is to understand Mr. Burns. He gave us (the readers) four good questions, but left us in the dark as to what he was trying to really say. Some got nothing out of it. The majority thought he was trying to say that he was very unhappy that people who are of color are in power and are doing a good Job. The last I hope is not true and I'm sure Mr. Steve J. Bums will help clear the air by writing an open letter to the people saying that he too will defend our campus from racism, sexism and heterosexism. Also,, if he doesn't mind. Id like him to answer four questions he presented in his letter."^ 1) What should a leader be? 2) Should he or she stir up controversy, inarch at the front of protests or speak Irresponsibly in public or private? 3) Should bis or her viewpoints change depending on the surroundings? 4) Do those with extreme notions and closed minds properly represent a varied group? Brad L. McGaughey (Editor's note: This 'letter was printed with an innacuracy in Wednesday's Collegian. We-reprint It today with the correction.) Burns' response Editor. .. <f This letter is written in response to Mr. (Bradl McGaugheys letter of Nov. 29, Firstly, please spell my name correctly. There's a good lad: S-T-E-P- H-E-N. not "Steven." Secondly, as to your request for "an open letter to the people saying that [I] too will defend ICSUF1 from racism, sexism and heterosexism." I have made my opinion on racism — when It's legitimate - copiously clear in past letters. I shall, however, happily answer the questions presented in my Nov. 8 letter to the editor. 1) A leader should be an Individual capable of representing those under his or her supervision, authority, etc. in an effective, cosmopolitan fashion, always keeping his or her personal Integrity high while not following an Individualized agenda over the people at large. 2) A leader might very well "make waves" before attaining his or her position as "chief." but certainly any responsible person acting as, say. ASI president must realize that time spent protesting equals time taken away from leadership duties. It is unwise for such an officer to neglect his or her constituents as a whole in favor of more provincial causes. It is further a sign of imcompetence. Irresponsibility and a lack of the self-control necessary for an authority figure for him or her to speak in a manner indicative of little concern for truth, decorum, or Just common decency — even to an opponent. 3) His or her viewpoints should not change on the surroundings, written Here to mean Immediate area, with lis Implications (Le. a G1J3SA (Gay. Lesbian and Bisexual Student Alliance) meeting. where heterosexuals may have been visiting. versus a date with (one's) boyfriend or ■a secret get-together for the purpose of. say, denouncing heterosexuals). In other words, what is said in the dark, should not need to be edited out for hearing in full daylight See LETTERS, page 4 John Welsh Twos about twenty-two nights before Christmas, and all through one apartment in Bulldog Lane Village, hot a creature was. •> stirring, not even a cockroach. ... MMMMmumble, mumble, mumble.... She bucks. That's all I had to spend on my famfly for Christmas gifts when I was a young lad. We Welshes weren't poor. My dad wasnt driving a Jaguar, though, and our house wasn't In. Beverly Hills, either. We Just knew what wc had to do to get by- rob the rich and give tc ourselves. Hey, Christmas meant a lot to us— and we aB were txuh/gtving- but giving is real tough when you ain t got no moola. So we did what any loving person would do when Christmas was nearing and the pockets were empty: stole from others who probably didn't need the money anyway. When we were desperate we used to gang tackle old ladles and steal their purses. My older sister Anne was the best at Operation Old Lady, as we used to caD It Anne knew these great karate moves that qulddy knocked the old lady unconscious for a few seconds. Just enough time to snake her purse. That got old real quick. thdtrgTi; * All we kept ending up wttrrwas -- - cheap perfume and a dollar or two. So we moved up on the robbery chart. We started knocking off armored trucks. We were desperate. Im telling you. Christmas was damn important to us. We loved each other so lovingly-like. When an armored truck wasn't around, we nailed a bankortwo. ' One year, with Christmas right around the corner, we got so good at our bankjobs that we were real close to buying our dad that Jaguar he always wanted. However, for some stupid reason we let Paul, the youngest of the Welsh clan, be In charge of the money. Maybe we let Paul be responsible for the cash because we thought tf we ever got caught the cops wouldn't nail a kid. Well, Paul's currently in hLs seventh year of a 25-year sentence at ajuvenile holding camp somewhere In 1x6 Angeles. We miss him dearly, but. come to think of It. he never did give us very good gifts for Christmas anyway. After Paul was arrested, we stopped doing bankjobs and started getting real Jobs. We all wcrk as bank tellers; Well. I used to. 1 should mention that Igot fired last year. I cant understand why. My boss was a big Jerk. Just because he caught me last December Txwrowlng" a few hundred bucks from the till he canned me. What a Jerk, huh? I mean. I explained to him that the money was going to go toward Christmas gifts and he still showed me the door. I was even going to get him a new tie. How ungrateful of him, huh? So. now, Christmas 1990 has Just about slammed us over the head. And Im getting a bit nervous. Things are really bad. My bank account hasn't seen much cash going In lately. I put my card Into the machine rhrtrther day and, instead of "';. 7; getting a couple Andrew Jacksons. I got only laughter. The stupid machine was laughing at me! I kicked it a couple times to show it who was boss. Then it kept my card. I hope my family isn't expecting much from this economically- plagued soul when the 25th rolls around. Of course, I'm not going to tell them not to get me anything. I mean, it's Christmas, for goodness sake. I wouldn't want them to not to be able to snare " their good will toward men, nametyme. To this day I am puzzled at my genius as a kid to be able to make six bucks stretch out to buy she gifts for fellow family membe rs.
